Euro Truck Simulator 2

RJL Scania T & T 4-series
Performance impacted
So, My friend has been using this truck while we play in a Convoy, and *every time* he uses the truck, it starts dropping FPS for everyone else. We know it's the truck because when he switches it (and he has no customizations in it) everything begins to work fine again.

It's a very weird issue, but is there any workaround to it?

Out of curiosity, is this the "newer style" T or the 4-series? I've noticed (in singleplayer, non-Convoy) that when driving the 4-series, my framerate drops massively (to the point of borderline unplayable) as soon as I switch on the lights (or more precisely, the dashboard lights). I had to limit myself to driving it in daylight hours when I didn't need the lights.

Many trucks (especially mod trucks with older "analog style" dashboards) tend to suffer an FPS drop when the dashboard lights come on, but this Scania T 4-series was especially bad. (I haven't yet tried the R 4-series from the companion mod but I wouldn't be surprised if it's similar.) It seems like it could use some optimization.

By contrast, the "newer style" T from this mod suffers a small FPS drop when the dashboard lights are enabled, but is still good enough to be playable (for me, anyway).

I'm running the game on a laptop with "merely OK" integrated graphics (specifically, a Microsoft Surface Pro 6 with an Intel i7-8650U CPU and Intel UHD Graphics 620; GPU memory is 8 GB, which I believe is shared with half of the 16 GB main system RAM). It's not able to run the game smoothly at max graphics settings, so I have things balanced to look as pretty as possible at 1080p (on an external monitor since the internal display is 2k) without stuttering. So I wouldn't be surprised if the reason my setup tends to expose mod trucks' optimization needs is because my specs are more borderline than the nice gaming rigs I imagine many modders are developing/testing on. :-)

This may or may not be the same as your issue in Convoy mode, but it caught my attention since I experienced similar issues in singleplayer with one of the trucks in this mod.

Don't expect your game to run smoothly with mods if you can not run the vanilla game fine with maxed out settings. The thing is that the game engine itself is so old that it only uses a single CPU core which is not optimal at all with modern CPUs. This is a problem especially in Convoy.

That's the thing, my game runs fine, I have a Radeon RX 5600XT and a Ryzen 5 3600X. But whenever the truck is present and nearby, the game starts stuttering massively.

I'm not sure why this could be.

Happens with both trucks in the mod when we're in convoy

For what it's worth, my computer can handle most other mod trucks fine - including most of the ones in your mods (the newer-style Scania R, T, and G work just fine; only the 4-series T - I haven't tried the 4-series R yet - slows down like tihs). It's totally understandable that you may not have time to optimize the FPS performance of all of them to the same level as the stock trucks; this is, of course, a free contribution and I for one very much appreciate its existence! :-) And I can see how optimizing old analog dashboards can be tricky since they have so many individual light sources; it does tend to be the older trucks that struggle more with FPS. But, I figured I'd mention it for whatever it's worth, in case something can be done about it if/when you get the chance; I know that other mod trucks (with older analog dashboards) have been able to see substantial FPS improvement version-over-version based on some careful optimization of (I would guess) things like light sources and polygon count.

That's interesting (and a bummer) to hear that the game engine is limited to using just one core. Hopefully SCS has a plan to address that in the not-so-far future, seeing as how they have publicly committed to supporting the ETS2/ATS codebase for a long time with continual improvements rather than starting fresh with an ETS3/ATS2.

I guess the 4-series interior may need some further material adjustments due to the new lighting system. I will have a look at that at some point.

Game engine isn't at fault here. There are a lot of truck mods out there that run as smooth or even smoother than vanilla trucks.
The issue with this mod is: it's made using the old system, where all cabs and chassis are placed in a single model and chosen through variants. This means, that every time the game tries to recalculate something about the model (collisions, trailer interactions, or even autosave) it has to recalculate all the cabs and all the chassis + every single part attached to it - that is an awful lot of stuff to recalculate. And that's what causes stuttering.
This did work for old SCS trucks, because they were low-poly and had only a few options. It doesn't work for this mod, because it's quite detailed and it has a lot of cabs/chassis options.
The most optimal way to fix this (because yes - this can be fixed), would be to update the mod to current SCS structure (separate models for everything), but given how much stuff is in this mod, this probably isn't a viable option.

Did you really have to Necro a 1,5 year old post?

is this fixed ?
LoaderSaints  [developer] 25 Feb, 2024 @ 9:30am
Not yet.
erj0 27 Feb, 2024 @ 7:10am
so still fps drops , in convoi ?
LoaderSaints  [developer] 27 Feb, 2024 @ 7:51am
Probably, depending on your hardware and game settings.
I think it's not hardware related, we tested this again a few days ago (after someone necroed the post) and it even happens with my RTX 3090 + Ryzen 9 3900X
LoaderSaints  [developer] 27 Feb, 2024 @ 9:53am
The drops do happen but may not be that severe with better hardware is what I meant. I myself cap the framerate at 60 due to TrackIR and experience very little drops with RTX3080Ti OC 12GB + i7-6700K.
erj0 28 Feb, 2024 @ 11:50am
when do you fix it?
