Once armor gets damaged it doesn't protect you as much.
The previous challenge I was hoping to address was my tendency to ignore the story and then just start grinding through base building, eventually getting bored with the grind. Attempted to follow the story for once, now, but clearly it requires a balanced approach.
The zirax used in the story missions and story POIs are custom noob-level zirax with almost no hp and a fraction of a normal zirax's damage. A body shot with the sniper rifle you should have gotten from the Heidelberg will drop them.
