There is no spine due to technical limitations, TF2 hats have a limit of 1400 triangles which is really tight and model detail is already a bit perilous. Cutting enough triangles to allow a spine would have made the rest of the model look really jagged.

Oh ok, do you think you could maybe add some kind of futuristic looking collar to cover it up though? Because it's kinda bugging me how the X-Ray just isn't detecting any spine. It's your design though, so do whatever you want with it but that's just my suggestion

you could achieve a pseudo spine with some clever UV design and only 2-3 plane faces for the neck.

i also think it would look far better with a spine. but engine limits are painful. i sympathise.
