Looks like I'm gonna have to now buy Troy. I always hesitated because of the lack of realism and unit background colors. Wow, thanks! A new Total War experience I may actually enjoy (I hated fantasy Warhammer).

I would basically recommend all the faction DLCs, as the will allow more faction choice later on.
If you did not buy it yet, it makes sense to buy the ultimate edition though that comes available during sale, as it includes all the DLC for a fair price and there are more mod projects in the work that do require the Mythos DLC for example.

Yes, if your army destroys units in an army with rare units, the units in your army have a chance to increase their rarity.

However, they can only increase rarity if a unit of higher rarity was destroyed in the enemy army.
FAMED unit death has a chance of your units to switch from COMMON > FAMED
EPIC unit death has a chance of your units to switch from FAMED > EPIC and a very good chance of COMMON > FAMED
LEGENDARY unit death has a chance of your units to switch from EPIC > LEGENDARY or LEGENDARY > GODLIKE and a very high chance for units to switch from COMMON > FAMED and FAMED > EPIC

Godlike rarity cannot be obtained via recruitment but only in battle, if you have a legendary unit and defeat an enemy legendary unit (very low chance though).
