Ancients bashing their way out of vaults

Are the ancients inside the sealed vaults supposed to be awake and bashing their way out of the vault when I show up?

So far it's happened every time and they don't stop until they starve to death (which on the first vault happened pretty quick, which surprised me because they had tons of meals inside once I got in).
