Qua Mario by floral Qua Floral
The most complex Mario on the Workshop! Qua Mario is a sequel/remake to my previous character Neo Mario, which was itself inspired by TurretBot's SMB1 Mario. The central premise behind the character: A Mario that plays exactly like he does in the platformers. Neo Mario built on the concept with the addition of the Spin Jump, Ground Pound, Twirls, and Lifts, along with the option to play as Luigi, Toadette, or two Toads. After 11 months spent rebuilding the whole thing from scratch, Qua Mario brings even more to the table with a total of 4 viable power-up options, several new moves from the 3D games, and three more playable Toads!

Gameplay
Always hold Run! It makes you move much faster.
Jump on an opponent to Stomp them... or on a projectile. Or on a Tetherball. Or on a Dracula. Or on anything else, basically. Any time you Stomp something, you bounce upwards off of it.
Spin Jumps fall through platforms and bounce off enemy attacks. At high percent, Spin Jumps can KO!
Ground Pounds and Lift Throws are reliable KO options. They have similar knockback stats.
Power-ups serve as both hitpoints and attacks. Use them while you can! Fire Toadette turns into Super Toadette when hit; Super Toadette turns into Small Toadette. Even a jab can kill Small Toadette...
Select a new power-up from the Roulette Platform every time you respawn! Choose between a Fire Flower, an Ice Flower, a Tanooki Leaf, and a Blue Koopa Shell.
The Fire Flower generates coins on hit. Collect 100 for an extra stock! Fireballs can be thrown rapidly at close range.
The Ice Flower can freeze projectiles, players, and lots more in solid ice! Frozen objects are totally solid as both walls and floors. Among the "lots more" that can be frozen are power-ups and loose coins. Even Shovel Knight's yoyo up-tilt can be frozen.
The Tanooki Leaf can float, fly, swing, reflect, and turn into the mysterious Statue Form! Waggling her tail allows Tanooki Toadette to fall slowly with a very flat trajectory. When her P Meter is full and flashing, waggling her tail instead allows Tanooki Toadette to gain altitude. A tail attack can knock opponents back and reflect enemy projectiles. When she becomes Statue Toadette, she completely resists enemy attacks.
The Blue Koopa Shell can resist hits, perform the speedy Shell Dash, and use an enhanced Triple Jump! When the shell is moving fast enough to harm an opponent, it leaves behind fading afterimages. When Shell Toadette is hit inside her shell, she'll rocket away at high speed without reverting to Super Toadette.

Controls
Attack / Special: Run or Use Power. Hold either button to move fast! Tap either button to use power-up abilities such as throwing Fireballs or Iceballs.
Jump: Hold for more height. Qua Mario has no jumpsquat. Tap the button to do a tiny hop, hold the button for a bigger jump. If Mario is moving fast at the start of the jump, he can go even higher.
Chain jumps for the Triple Jump! Each of the three jumps goes higher and further than the last. Jump after a skid to Sideflip! Sideflips send Mario quickly back in the direction he came from.

MunoPhone (Touch)
Qua Mario has full integration with the MunoPhone Touch! Press Taunt in Practice Mode to pull up the phone. The Tips app contains lots of useful in-depth information that wouldn't fit on this page, so if you're looking to take your Qua Mario gameplay to the next level, set some time aside to read through it. The Patches app will keep you up-to-date on changes as they come. While Qua Mario doesn't really have frame data per se, the Data app still offers information about how all of his hitboxes behave. Lastly, the Cheats app has plenty of abilities for both fun and testing - change Mario's current power instantly, swap out the contents of his reserve, lock him into his current power-up state, let him carry any object whatsoever, and more! For the more technically inclined among you, you might find his very last cheat interesting - gain access to the highly experimental QDebugger, a tool which can list all instances present in the match, view and edit any of their variables, and even modify the contents of structs. Shoot me a message if you want to implement this into your character - it can be quite useful for debugging, but has some stability issues and therefore isn't ready for a full public release.
One more fun detail about the phone - it'll use the correct name and pronouns for the character alt you selected! Isn't technology amazing?

Mario's fragility is offset by his X-factor: 1-ups. Certain actions will allow Mario to earn an extra stock, keeping him in the fight for longer. In particular, keep an eye out for attacks that earn more and more points with each hit (like Stomps). If one of those attacks can connect 8 times in a row, Mario will earn an extra life! Be wary, though - if another player somehow takes ownership of the attack before it lands that eighth hit, they'll get a life instead!

Qua Mario is explicitly designed to play well in almost any gamemode and matchup - dittos, Endless Abyss, Tetherball, Adventure Mode, and even Team Battles.

Be careful with your Reserve! Any player can nab it if you aren't quick enough. When the item is floating at the top of the screen, only its rightful owner can interact with it, but once it begins to fall it's fair game. Other Qua Mario players will receive abilities from your power-ups just like you'd expect. Any other character will recover health instead - 8% for the Super Mushroom, 10% or 16% for the Tanooki Leaf (depending on whether they have a tail), and 12% for anything else. Of note is that Mario's teammates receive four times the amount of health if they grab his power-up. Knowing when to share is important - sometimes they might need a power-up even more than you do!

Compat
Mario has all sorts of interactions with base-cast characters. He can ground-pound Kragg's pillar to drive it downwards like a stake. He'll slide around on Etalus's ice like in a snow level. Many of his articles can be Bashed by Ori. Standing on Sylvanos's grass gives Mario better traction. And don't even get me STARTED on what happens when Ranno swallows him on his last hitpoint...
There are also several robust, easy to use, and flexible compatibility systems that allow other characters to open up unique interactions with Qua Mario.
  • Stages and characters can mark any object as Freezable, enabling Ice Mario to encase it in solid ice.
  • Stages and characters can mark any object as Grabbable, Liftable, or both to let Mario carry them.
  • Characters can indicate whether or not they have a Tail so they'll receive an appropriate amount of health from the Tanooki Leaf.
  • Stages can tell Mario what footstep sounds to play when he stands on their solid ground and platforms, and even give him new ones! Characters can also override Mario's footsteps when he walks on their articles.
  • Particularly ambitious developers can even use Movetypes to alter Mario's physics on the ground!
  • Characters can change their behaviour relating to how Mario carries them, how they can escape a Lift, and how they can break free from Ice Flower ice.
If you've created a character or stage, I highly encourage you to look into Qua Mario's compatibility! There's a pinned Discussion with links to compatibility guides for all of these features. All of these compatibility systems are designed to be incredibly simple to use, but with the option to implement more complex integration for greater control and flexibility. Most have zero performance impact at all when Mario isn't present in battle, and quite minimal impact when he is. If you need any compatibility features that aren't present, let me know and I'd be very eager to cook something up for you!
Qua Mario also has compatibility with Steve's death messages! Every attack has its own death message. Try freezing a coin and throwing it at Steve! More Workshop compatibility features to come.

Plans
What's coming next? Lots of content! For the short term, you can expect to see at least one new power-up soon, along with an entirely new mechanic to add more strategy to battles. There will also be constant bugfixes, performance improvements, and updates to the spritework.

An especially big thanks to GlacialSiren484 of the Super Sheet team. He made several sprites himself just because Qua Mario needed them. What a cool guy!
I'd also like to say thanks to Remy for her assistance in playtesting the character throughout its development, Snolid Ice for their help with bouncing some ideas back and forth, and Quarkjoy for being the coolest QPP in the world! :)
