A flamethrower burns thing (well obviously) so called the flamethrower a calorie burner because it will burn the calories of other players by burning them
TF2 items often have pun names; off the top of my head, I just came up with 'Afterburner'; it could be a flamethrower built out of a plane engine. The joke works because Afterburner refers to both the fact that it is made of plane parts and that it literally inflicts afterburn. I just Googled 'TF2 Afterburner' and somebody's already done that exact idea because it's so obvious.
If you strip away a level of that wordplay then it's meaningless. Imagine the flamethrower was still called Afterburner but it had nothing to do with planes. This is the equivalent of a flamethrower called Calorie Burner but nothing to do with exercise.
