It's a jogging hoodie; when exercising you burn calories. There's wordplay there and it went right over your head.

That makes no sense because a flamethrower would have no relevance to exercise. The joke only works when it can refer to either topic; exercise or burning people. A jogging hoodie is relevant to both topics whereas a flamethrower is not.

A flamethrower burns thing (well obviously) so called the flamethrower a calorie burner because it will burn the calories of other players by burning them

The joke works because it plays into multiple meanings. Let's say you had a flamethrower called the Calorie Burner; what are the two meanings here? There's only one; the fact that you burn things with it. It has no relevance to the exercise theme so there's no joke there.

TF2 items often have pun names; off the top of my head, I just came up with 'Afterburner'; it could be a flamethrower built out of a plane engine. The joke works because Afterburner refers to both the fact that it is made of plane parts and that it literally inflicts afterburn. I just Googled 'TF2 Afterburner' and somebody's already done that exact idea because it's so obvious.

If you strip away a level of that wordplay then it's meaningless. Imagine the flamethrower was still called Afterburner but it had nothing to do with planes. This is the equivalent of a flamethrower called Calorie Burner but nothing to do with exercise.
