An option for a chance that npcs could become one of the special infected when infected
(basically the sub-type system but for special infected)

ragdolls or corpses are eatable for zombies and when they done eating the corpse will turn into a zombie ( something like bio-annahlition 2 )

horde formations where zombies will form actual groups instead of just all going towards a target and then just going their seperate ways, zombies would eat a corpse on the ground which will have a small-decent chance to become a slower weaker zombie, zombies will eat each other if a target or corpse has not been found for a while, zombies might puke a recent targets or their own flesh causing anything that steps in it to slow down,if a target or corpse or nearby zombie has not been found for a very long time the zombie will "rot" becoming weaker and slower and stumbling more and more untill they die, a new zombie type that pukes on its hands causing its target to slow down giving the zombie and its friends a chance, if standing near a zombie/ group of zombies the target will be given a buff thats makes it smell like the zombies and becoming able to sneak by them (may or may not be inspired by walking dead saints and sinners), better hearing system, zombies could form "nests" in areas that spawn weapons and ammo and skeletons, bleeding system, glass zombie type that has bits of broken glass all over it and gives bleeding to the target and itself on hit, something to do with vortigaunts doing something special instead of becoming zombies, "fancy" section with zombies in suits, dresses, expensive clothes, people that look like gamblers, and basicly las vegas casino staff and security gaurds, "labrotory" section with scientists, gaurds, ect, if 2 factions are fighting like combine and rebels a "smart" zombie will watch from a distance and wait until one side is defeted and then go for an attack. thats is for my ideas. i know u wont be able to do all of em, but hopefully some of em will give u some ideas. idk where i was going with this im a fan of zombies, amazing mod u made, and good luck on viremia. cheers.

i got quite a few.

variant mutation: after a set amount of a time, (default = 30 minutes - 1 hour) and after a set amount of DNA points has been gotten (gained by killing npcs) a single infected will mutate into a variant.
