New Decision: Reclaim the Western Roman Empire
By reclaiming enough western provinces, holding the Empire of Italy, having high enough prestige, and being liked by the Byzantine Emperor, you can now be recognized as a true Roman co-emperor by the Byzantines, reforming the Western Roman Empire and earning the nickname "The Glorious". (The Holy Roman Emperor, if they exist, will take a heavy prestige and opinion hit). The requirements are:

  • Hold the title Empire of Italy
  • Hold all of Italy
  • Hold southern Burgundy
  • Hold eastern Spain
  • Hold Carthage
  • Hold Dalmatia
  • Be of Roman culture OR be a Christian OR be Hellenic
  • Not be the Byzantine or Holy Roman Empires
  • Byzantine Emperor must have greater than 75 opinion of you

Note that features relating to new landed titles require a new game. The game generates landed titles only once, at the start of a new game, so loading this mod into a previous save will not correctly generate the WRE title, and the features relating to it will be broken.

New Landed Title: The Western Roman Empire
Has not yet been created at game start, and must be reclaimed using the new decision before it becomes an active title.

New Cultural Tradition: Western Roman Succession. Enables use of Imperial Elective succession, enables the "Born in the Red" trait, makes the Just trait more common, and causes opinion penalties for leaders with poor education. Requires Latin heritage.

New Succession Type: Imperial Elective Succession. This is meant to simulate court politics surrounding who succeeds the imperator; though the imperator may declare an heir, after they die, their generals, councilors, or spouses may decide to put someone else on the throne. This is heavily based off of Imperial Elective from CK2.

Valid electors are:
  • The Emperor
  • The Emperor's consort(s)
  • The head of faith of the Emperor
  • Any direct vassals of the Emperor who satisfy any of:
    • Is a powerful vassal
    • Is a knight
    • Has a martial skill greater than or equal to 12
    • Holds a higher rank than duke

Valid candidates for the succession must not be deformed and are:
  • The Emperor's close family members
  • Claimants to the Empire
  • The Emperor's consort(s)
  • The Emperor's marshal
  • Any direct vassals of the Emperor who have greater than 10 martial.

Voting power is based on a mix of traits, skills, prestige, and renown. The Emperor is likely to have more voting power than any two or three electors put together, but will need to deftly maneuver the political situation in order to ensure their preferred heir is elected. Note that Western Roman Empire automatically has this government upon reformation (but Roman Empire and Byzantine Empires do not; this will be added in the future).

New Event: Roman Triumph
A particularly successful Roman general (including the player) may be granted a Roman Triumph by their Emperor. This honor may only be granted once in a general's lifetime, but the politics may be difficult - friends of the general will be pleased if they are honored with a triumph, but their foes will be angry. Conversely, a general who has performed deeds worthy of a triumph but does not receive one will be deeply insulted, as will their friends - though their enemies will be pleased.

If a general is granted a triumph, they will gain the Legatus trait, giving them additional bonuses to their martial and prowess and improving their command ability. As time goes on, however, they may find themselves less friendly with their Emperor, as success, honor, and power can often sharpen a prominent general's ambitions - and an Emperor of Rome must always be aware that generals have deposed Emperors in the past.

New Trait: Legate / Legata (Legatus Romanus)
This trait can be purchased during character creation, and otherwise must be earned on the battlefield. Upon winning twenty battles in a row (not against their emperor), the emperor may choose to grant a triumph to their successful general. A general with this trait gains bonuses to martial, prowess, and enemy fatal casualties, as well as a general opinion bonus with their vassals who are pleased at serving a prominent and successful general, and an attraction bonus with people attracted to their gender who are interested in someone so alluringly powerful. They also gain opinion penalties with their liege, and they gain increased AI ambition.

New Event: Study the Roman Classics
This event has a chance of firing every year that you have your capital in Italy, as long as you have an antiquarian, and you are not Roman. Upon the event firing, you will have several choices of what to do.

New Artifacts: Four new book artifacts (more to come):
  • The Writings of Cicero, a new book artifact that buffs diplomacy. Based off of the writings of Marcus Tullius Cicero.
  • Meditations, a new book artifact that buffs stewardship. Based off of the writings of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.
  • Commentarii de Bello Gallico, a new book artifact that buffs martial. Based off of the writings of Gaius Julius Caesar.
  • Antiquitates Rerum Humanarum et Divinarum, a new book artifact that buffs learning. Based off of the writings of Marcus Terentius Varro.

New Decision: Adopt Roman Traditions
A very well-studied ruler who has read the Roman classics may choose to adopt Roman traditions and customs, changing their culture to Roman and reviving the dead culture.

New Battlefield Event Chain: A Vision of Glory
  • Can randomly trigger during battle.
  • Requires that you are personally in command of your troops, and your enemy has at least one knight.
  • Requires that you are either a lunatic, or you are Roman, or you are studying Roman literature
  • Dangerous event that may result in you being killed or wounded.
  • Upon successful completion of the event chain, you can gain the character modifier "Touched by Olympus"

New Decision: Convert to Hellenism
  • Requires 20 learning.
  • Requires that you be Touched by Olympus.

New Decision: Determine Personal Deities
  • If Hellenic and Hellenism has the tenet for Personal Deities (note that new save games automatically have this tenet; older save games will have to reform to it), allows you to choose a personal deity for various boosts.
  • Select from Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Dis, or Juno.

New Decision: Reopen the Colosseum
A ruler of Rome may choose to refurbish and reopen the Colosseum to gladiatorial combat once more. Doing so will draw crowds from across Rome and placate the masses, increasing the general opinion of Rome, improving development, improving taxes in the county, and improving your prowess. However, the large influx of crowds and foreigners and upkeep of the Colosseum itself also lowers control, increases building costs, lowers your learning, and may make you unpopular with the clergy. There is a five year cooldown between opening and closing the Colosseum or the Circus Maximus.

New Decision: Close the Colosseum
A ruler of Rome may choose to close the Colosseum and end the gladiator bouts. This decision causes public order penalties for a short time, and removes all effects of the Colosseum. There is a five year cooldown between opening and closing the Colosseum or the Circus Maximus.

New Decision: Incite the Circus Maximus
A ruler of Constantinople may choose to inflame the rivalries between the charioteers of the Circus Maximus. Doing so will increase the interest and passions of the populace, improving the general opinion of Constantinople, improving development, improving taxes, and improving your stewardship. However, the rowdy sports spectators may riot or otherwise cause problems in the city, lowering control, increasing building costs, lowering your learning, and may make you unpopular with the clergy. There is a five year cooldown between inciting and calming the Circus Maximus or the Colosseum.

New Decision: Calm the Circus Maximus
A ruler of Constantinople may choose to calm the rivalries between the charioteers of the Circus Maximus. This decision causes public order penalties for a short time, and removes all effects of the Circus Maximus. There is a five year cooldown between inciting and calming the Circus Maximus or the Colosseum.

New Cultural Tradition: Western Roman Legacy
  • Allows the recruitment of four of the new men-at-arms regiments

  • Includes all bonuses from Eastern Roman Legacy

  • Includes a couple bonuses from Republican Legacy.

  • Allows children who meet the conditions to be born with the "Born in the Red" trait.

Conditions to receive "Born in the Red":
    • Parent must have the title of the Roman Empire (formed by decision to Restore the Roman Empire).
    • Parent's capital must be in Rome.
    • Mother must not be imprisoned at time of birth.
    • Mother must not be in command of troops at time of birth.
    • If unlanded, mother must be in Rome at time of birth.

Note that if you intend to rule Rome from Constantinople and you want your children to gain a "Born in the" trait, you will want to use a Greek culture rather than a Latin culture, since the Byzantine traditions are still the only way to get that. Born in the Red is inaccessible to Byzantine cultures and Born in the Purple is inaccessible to Latin cultures.

Modified Cultural Tradition: Eastern Roman Legacy
  • Eastern Roman Legacy allows the recruitment of four of the new men-at-arms regiments.

New Trait: Born in the Red

Mechanically identical to the Born in the Purple trait. This trait can only be received if you have the Western Roman Legacy trait, have reformed the Roman Empire or the Western Roman Empire via decision, and have your capital in Rome. It allows Roman Empire reformations to have the capital in Rome without sacrificing the Born in the Purple trait, but you will also have to reform your culture to be Western Roman (this is with the assumption that if you want to have the Roman capital in Byzantium, you'll be playing as a Greek Roman, and if you want to have the Roman capital be in Rome, you'll be playing as a Latin Roman).

New Men-at-Arms Regiments:

Roman men-at-arms regiments are usually slightly more powerful than their standard equivalents, with some exceptions. Balancing changes may still be made.

Western Roman Empire:
  • Cohortes Legionarii (Legionary Cohort): The legions of Rome shall never be driven from this land, nor any other. Heavy infantry, about as powerful and expensive as Norse culture Varangian Veterans. Counters spearmen and archers.

  • Cohortes Exploratores (Scout Cohort): Rome's lightly armored scouts are experts and finding the enemy. Skirmishers that are slightly more powerful than standard skirmishers. Counters heavy infantry.

  • Equites Cataphractarii (Cataphracts): Roman cataphracts can thunder through enemy lines with lance and mace. Heavy cavalry. They have identical stats to vanilla cataphracts. Counters archers.

  • Scholares Palatinae (Imperial Escort Cavalry) - The imperial escort cavalry are superbly armed and armored. Light cavalry, about on par with Outremer culture chasseurs. Counters archers and skirmishers.

Eastern Roman Empire:
  • Tagma ton Varangon (Varangian Guards) - The elite Varangian Guard are a formidable foe in any engagement. Heavy infantry, on par with Norse culture Varangian Veterans, and are as expensive. Counters pikemen and heavy cavalry.

  • Banda ton Vallistra (Crossbow Company) - Roman crossbowmen are trained to loose deadly volleys of bolts. Archers, moderately more powerful than vanilla bowmen. Counters skirmishers and heavy infantry.

  • Banda ton Akontistes (Spearmen Company) - Rome's staunch infantrymen will stand against any onslaught. Spearmen, moderately more powerful than standard pikemen. Counters light cavalry, heavy cavalry, camel cavalry, and elephant cavalry.

  • Kataphraktoi (Cataphracts) - Roman cataphracts can thunder through enemy lines with lance and mace. Heavy cavalry. They have identical stats to vanilla cataphracts. Counters archers.

New Title: Upon restoring the Roman Empire (as the WRE) you will now earn the title "Restitutor Orbis" (Restorer of the World). Changes for ERE, HRE, and Italy so that they will earn that title instead of "the Glorious" will come soon.
