Not gaining xp
Is there something special I need to do to gain xp? I've played a few rounds, killed zombies, bought weapons, etc, but no xp was gained. I did this all in solo online mode. Could the online community patch be breaking it (https://github.com/shiversoftdev/t7patch) ? And if so does anyone know any work arounds?

Wouldn't surprise me if the "community patch" corrupted/altered your stock files. Which is where your rank is saved to....

This ones probably on me. I believe I was mistakenly looking at the level displayed in the menus, rather than the one in game.

While initially it seemed like even that level wasn't persisting, it has since been working fine. So I assume the issue was my stupidity rather than anything else.
