Hive Roleplay
Hello everyone,

Over the course of this mod many requests for hive armies have come up. For a period of time it was believed that this was not possible, but as things stand its looking like i may be able to add them. This leads to an interesting question however, what do hive armies look like? On the one hand there are plenty of space ant hives in science fiction, Zerg, Rachni, Tyranids, etc.... but that is not entirely how stellaris handles hives. It is entirely possible to roleplay hives that are less animalistic and more sentient. There isn't a good way to differentiate between them via government or civics so ultimately it looks like they are going to have to have one roster with a few unique armies based on civics and other things just like everyone else.

So, what should a hive army roster look like? If you play hives a lot, or a planning a hive run leave a comment on how you envision their military working and if you think they should have sci-fi hive units or the current regular roster units.

I think you could add armies for civics like the ravenous hive specifically, and model them after Tyranids or Xenomorphs. Add like different castes of the species that specialize in certain things, like a caste of skirmishers, heavy infantry, living artillery, living air support, stuff like that.

Hmmm, now this is an idea!

For the non ravenous, you could look to Starship Troopers (the book, the bugs were simply trying to make their way in the universe), and/or Ender's Game.

To an extent, but in both of those instances the hives are just that, Bugs. They fight using drones that are both expendable and often equipped with biological armor and melee weapons. They are differentiated from say the Tyranids or the film Starship Trooper bugs by their behavior not the physiology or methods. That is difficult to model within the already narrow confines of the Stellaris army system. Especially since hives in stellaris can be anything, you can have a bipedal human hivemind which wouldn't quite make sense if all the armies are hulking tank drones and the like.
