Once you download the mod, you can find the source code in the workshop files. If you yourself don't understand C# you can get someone to check it for you.

C# standard library has a thing called a StreamReader, it allows for reading a stream of data, for example, a file. For example, a file with your custom names.

Perhaps, I'm not sure how well encapsulated they are in the means of execution and how much privilege they're given over the system through the game's engine but it could be possible. That being said, you can always check if a mod is malware by checking it's code or getting someone to check it for you. That is the beauty of open source.
