Before anything you will need two things downloaded for ease of use.

First is VS Code. It makes things a lot easier and can open yml files.
https://code.visualstudio.com/download

Next and this is just for ease of use but you will also need Adobe Bridge. It is Free if i recall correctly and it allows you to batch rename the simp_chinese files or whatever the files are to english.
https://www.adobe.com/products/bridge.html

So now that you have those two things lets get onto the guide. It is quite easy honestly. Specially since VS Code shows you how many characters you have selected when copy and pasting.

Now I use Google Translate but you can use whatever you want it doesn't really matter. Most translation programs only allows 5000 characters to be translated. Luckily on the bottom of the program VS Code shows you how many characters you have selected. Now don't ever half translate it will mess things up even if you don't reach 5000 characters and you need to go to the line number before then do so.

Now what i do is copy and paste all the localization files then put it in its own folder after that i open VS Code then use explorer to selected the folder with all the yml files. Then i go to the search and replace option replace simp_chinese with english before I start translating.

Now this is technically a windows guide however you do it on other operating systems is your prerogative. I just alt tab inbetween VS Code and Google Translate and copy and paste essentially.

Afterwards I open bridge and navigate to the folder with all the files then select all the files then go to tools then batch rename and set it to change simp_chinese to english.

And that is it really. Its not that complicated just tedius.

Enjoy

Can you just rename the files directly without the bridge?

Yes

Try asking Bing AI to translate the files for you. It tends to make a lot less grammatical errors and doesn't make weird capitalization errors, and seems to go faster than using Google Translate. I've had good luck translating things this way, with just a few caveats.

- It seems not to want to translate things that are too profane or violent, for these specific lines I just go to Google Translate.
- It really seems to like using “, ”, ‘, and ’ instead of " and '. Stellaris doesn't like these characters, just batch replace them using VS Code.
- It won't separate entries by line. Just do it yourself by hitting 'enter'.

I haven't tried using ChatGPT for translating yet, but Bing does a pretty good job of it, I've found.

I have used Bing but i dont like it. Its not nearly as fast as google translate. yes it may be better however it is less efficient specially when having to translate multiple files. If its working for you then thats great but also batch renaming stuff that you dont really know what it is for is also dangerous as well. ANd can cause some errors.

This is an old thread, but I've tried to put the localization of one of the mods into ChatGPT (while also telling it the context of the file). It seems to translate everything well, and even put the correct names

Here are some of the comparisons, actually, from the Madoka Magica mod :

Your mod's version
councilor_magic_protector:0 ""Guardian of Determination" councilor_magic_protector_female:0 "Guardian of Determination" councilor_magic_protector_desc:0 "She protects the world, the world beloved by the goddess of universal love (warning: this is a supermodel numerical cabinet position)" councilor_magic_protector_desc_female:0 "She protects the world, the world beloved by the goddess of universal love (warning: this is a supermodel numerical cabinet position)"

Chat GPT's version
councilor_magic_protector:0 "Determined Protector" councilor_magic_protector_female:0 "Guardian of Determination" councilor_magic_protector_desc:0 "She protects this world, a world beloved by a benevolent goddess. (Warning: This is an overpowered cabinet position.)" councilor_magic_protector_desc_female:0 "She protects this world, a world beloved by a benevolent goddess. (Warning: This is an overpowered cabinet position.)"

Your mod's version
mahoshoujo_legend.3.name:0 "Harvest of Reincarnation" mahoshoujo_legend.3.research.desc:0 "Our time traveler Xiao Meiyan brought back some research data from the future during this time travel, which will greatly improve the empire's scientific and technological research process." mahoshoujo_legend.3.decryption.desc:0 "Our time traveler Xiao Meiyan brought back some enemy intelligence information from the future during this time travel, which will help our deciphering and intelligence work."

Chat GPT's version
mahoshoujo_legend.3.name:0 "Harvest of the Cycle" mahoshoujo_legend.3.research.desc:0 "Our time traveler, Akemi Homura, has brought back research materials from the future during this loop, significantly advancing the empire's technological progress." mahoshoujo_legend.3.decryption.desc:0 "Our time traveler, Akemi Homura, has brought back intelligence data from the future during this loop, aiding our decryption and intelligence operations."

So the problem with using Chat GPT or any other service is the simple fact of chat limit at a certain point me and Thing noticed that it will stop translating or reach daily limit. Also even chat gpt gets a lot of it wrong anyways except for names it does have a knack for that. Now if you want to use your daily limit send me the files ill use those,Also i dont play Stellaris anymore so my motivation for updating the mod is quite low I apologize but it is what it is.
Daily limit seems to apply only for the same chat section. Retrying seems to be fine for me. Ofc, there's the whole 'stop translating' part which.... yeah, I agree.

I do wonder if Copilot in VSCode is a good alternative. It's at least somewhat good with coming up with new materials. Anyways, I'll send you the Madoka one since I did finish the translation

NOTE : I added an entirely new file called 'mahoshoujo_diplo_l_english.yml' earlier since I got some errors with the insult/compliment translation earlier. You can remove this if you prefer to stick with the original material

EDIT : Tried Copilot with Rozen Maiden leader mod's localization. The result is not bad, actually
