The solution is to make sure to install the font beforehand as a system theme. This was tested on the TF2 theme for this addon with `TF2build.ttf` required to be installed.

Please provide a download link to the ttf file used in the default theme on the workshop page, so people on OSX and Linux can install the font to solve the problem.

Have the exact same issue, I tried decompiling the mod and I still wasn't able to find it. If I read the code correctly, it makes the font on the fly? (Do not quote me on that though, I am not super good with lua)

I attempted to decompile the mod as well, and there was a font that was just icons called Ma-something. I didn't even bother to download it.

One idea I have is to use the TF2 sample theme they did, decompile it, revert and recreate the style of the vanilla HUD, and then change the font to Noto Sans.

Marlett, and yeah it doesn't do jack... (Though It does look like it's using the font in-game? still gibberish but of note maybe) Do let me know if you get anywhere with the TF2 theme work around though!

TF2 theme works if you install TF2 Build and TF2 Secondary
The texture for the TF2 theme is broken in general.

Apologies for necro-ing, but what process did you end up using to decompile the mod? Where in the `garrysmod` folder was it stored?

Note, I have confirmed this still happens even with no other addons installed (just a sanity check), and it's also still a problem on the Steam Deck.
