How does Autocasting work?

You can set a lot of abilities to autocast but it seems to do nothing in some cases and in others I swear I've seen pawns buffing enemies or wasting focus repeatedly buffing. What's the logic for autocasting psy abilities?

i tried with skills that focused on attacking someone like ice spike and frost ray, and what i saw after using those skills once, as soon they're out of cooldown the pawn will use that skill again, so i guess the autocasting is to be used for skills they're spammable but you don't want to micro manage that pawn
