Elaina: Wandering Witch
[OUTDATED] A Comprehensive Guide to Elaina: Wandering Witch Mod (1.5.1)
NOTICE: This guide is currently outdated after a big change in the way proficiency works. The basic gist of it is that everything is now tied to wand proficiency and you can raise proficiency as you beat more vanilla bosses. I'll be doing some more in depth research on the changes and the guide will be updated accordingly.

For anyone confused about any features of this mod as of the current version (1.5.1) I'm writing this!

I. How to Start
You need to create a new character and name them "Elaina" or「伊蕾娜」
Their appearance does not matter, since the sprite will be replaced with a cute custom sprite of Elaina!

When you spawn into the world, you are given a Wand, two hats, and a spell book. You're very powerful already even at the beginning of the game, so don't worry too much. Keep the spell book for crafting later, you'll need 3 total.

Some info about Elaina's inherent traits:
Keep in mind that your HP is limited. Once you reach 200 HP, any time you try to increase it again, it only increases it by 10 instead of 20.
Elaina is immune to Magic Disease, and will automatically use Mana Potions without the need of accessories. Picking up coins also lets her recover some mana, giving her a "Happy" buff that speeds up her mana recovery for while.

II. Craftable Items
These are the current items you can craft.

  • Wand - 1 Wood. This is just in case you lose the wand.
  • Spell Book - 1 Book and 10 Fallen Stars.
  • Broom - 10 Wood and 20 Hay. This is your main mount. It consumes mana depending on your movement speed, and can gain more effects the more you use it. Once Proficiency is at level 5, you can hit spacebar for a quick dash, or hold it to go in high acceleration.
  • Cauldron - 1 Campfire and 10 Iron/Lead.
  • Magic Sharing Ring - 10 Hallowed Bars and a Mana Regeneration Band Ciphers mana from an ally who's also wearing the ring when yours is depleted.
  • Healing Book - 50 Jungle Spores, 50 Moonglows, 50 Vines, and 1 Spell Book
  • Fire Book - 15 Hell Butterflies, 50 Fireblossom, 100 Living Fire Blocks, and 1 Spell Book.
  • Ice Book - 15 Frost Cores, 50 Shiverthorns, 100 Ice/Snow Blocks, and a Spell Book.

The spell book items seem to be a pain to craft, but that's why we have the alchemy cauldron!

III. Alchemy Cauldron
When you place down the cauldron, you can right click it to enter Refinement mode. To start, drag items from your inventory into the cauldron and hold left click to put them inside. Depending on the items you put in there, you can craft items.

There is unfortunately only 1 alchemy recipe so far;
Ultimate Magic Potion - 1 Lesser Mana Potion and 3 Dirt/Stone/Clay/Mud. It restores 1000 Mana and stacks up to 30. Very redundant, to be honest, but you can sell these for 1 Gold 5 Silver 26 Copper per potion, so it's a massive profit to sell them.

Duplication
The main use for alchemy is duplication. If you place an item that can stack up to 999 into the cauldron and you have obsidian in your inventory, you can duplicate that item. Duplication also consumes mana, so bring some mana potions if you'll be making a big batch.

The rarity of the item you're duplicating (i.e. the color of the item name. Check the Terraria Wiki for Item Rarity [terraria.fandom.com]) can sometimes be too high for your Alchemy Level. After testing out each of the rarities in different levels, I've confirmed which item colors you can duplicate at which alchemy level

Alchemy Level Proficiency
  • Level 0 & 1 - Gray & White
  • Level 2 - Blue
  • Level 3 - Green
  • Level 4 - Orange
  • Level 5 - Light Red
  • Level 6 - Pink
  • Level 7 - Light Purple
  • Level 8 - Lime
  • Level 9 - Yellow
  • Level 10 - Cyan

With that, the ideal Alchemy Level by the time you obtain the fire book is Level 6, as Frost Cores are a Pink rarity item. Make sure to keep up with your duplication and use it to get all the items needed to craft the spell books!

IV. Spells, How to Learn Them, and Becoming Proficient
With your Wand, you can use a total of 8 spells in the game ー 6 Active spells and 2 Passive spells. Most of these spells are learned through obtaining their respective magic books, and almost all of them get better the more you use them.

To switch around these spells, hit Q and a popup menu of Elaina's Brooch will show up, showing the 6 different active spells you can switch to. (You can change the keybinds in your controls.)

Some of these spells have different effects depending on if you single tap or hold your mouse button too!

Magic Missile
This is the first offensive spell you get at the beginning. It's a simple magic missile, and when you level up your proficiency, they start homing in on enemies. They can go through blocks, at least around 10-15 blocks, before they disappear.

Proficiency Levels
  • Level 3 - Magic Missiles start homing in on enemies.
  • Level 5 - When you single tap your button, five magic missiles appear around you and will automatically launch when an enemy is nearby.
  • Level 8 - Holding the button will now send out a barrage of magic missiles. Your screen will adjust towards where you're aiming, as if you had the sniper scope accessory. Consumes a lot of mana.
  • Level 10 - Overall damage increase.

You'll be using this spell a lot, and it's great for dealing with large waves of enemies without destroying the environment!

Light Spell
Pressing your middle mouse button lets you cast a very bright light, brighter than any torch you could ever craft. It consumes a tiny bit of mana, but it's barely noticeable. This is available right when you begin.

Magic Barrier
Pressing your right mouse button casts a barrier around you. It reduces any damage you take to 1 and can knock enemies back. This is available right when you begin.

When Magic Missile reaches Level 10 Proficiency, the barrier automatically activates whenever you are hit with a projectile, even when not holding the wand. This is a VERY powerful ability, and makes up for your HP limitations all the way until Moon Lord.

Healing Magic
This is the first magic book you can obtain. The Healing Book is crafted with 50 EACH of Jungle Spores, Moonglows, and Vines, as well as 1 Spell Book . Once you gather these in the Jungle Biome, you'll be craft the Healing Book. Use it and you can now switch to healing magic.

Healing magic consumes mana to recover both you and your allies' health, it also cures all debuffs. This does not improve with usage unfortunately, but is a good support spell to stay alive.

Water Magic
This is the second magic book you can obtain, and can be obtained from the books found in the Temple. Break the books found in the dungeon and you have a chance to find the Water Book, so you don't need to kill Skeletron if you're lucky. Use it and you can now switch to water magic.

Single tapping water magic will cast a bit of rainfall at your cursor, but if you hold the button, you can charge up a Water Ball Strike that deals a lot of damage. It can consume mana when you hold it, but if you point your cursor at a water source (including rain). you instead consume the water around your cursor instead of mana.

Water is consumed when hitting an enemy. Depending on it's size and health pool, remaining water that's not used is left behind. If you just hit the ground with this, you can create and infinite amount of water.

Proficiency Levels
  • Level 3 - Increases max size of Water Ball.
  • Level 5 - Increases max size of Water Ball and Ignores Defense.
  • Level 8 - Increases max size of Water Ball and is a guaranteed Critical Hit.
  • Level 10 - Increases the overall damage of the Water Ball.

A good strategy to employ is to cast rainfall above you and absorb that to max out your Water Ball Strike. You can also create a small water source near your arena with this same spell. Do note that using this spell will most definitely flood your area, so be careful not to make your friend mad at you for destroying all the torches in the Hellavator.

Fire Magic
This magic is available to you once you enter Hard Mode. The Fire Book is crafted from 15 Hell Butterflies, 50 Fireblossom, 100 Living Fire Blocks, and 1 Spell Book. Use it and you can now switch to fire magic.

Single tapping fire magic launches a destructive fire ball in one direction, while Holding fire magic charges up a very long Ray of Fire. This ray also evaporates water and wet enemies, dealing bonus damage.

BIG WARNING: The fireball does destroy blocks, which can be toggled OFF with a keybind from your control settings. The Ray of Fire also burns grass and trees, but even if they burn they still drop their wood. It does not burn wooden blocks.

Proficiency Levels
  • Level 3 - Increases fireball damage.
  • Level 5 - Increases fireball damage and the player gets recoil from casting it.
  • Level 8 - Increases fireball damage.
  • Level 10 - Increases fireball damage and lets you cast fireball rapidly.

It's great to use to apply constant burn damage to enemies, is what I thought before i reached Level 10. It completely out classes the Water Magic since you can spam the fireball now! I'm sorry I ever doubted you Fire Magic.

Ice Magic
This magic is available to you once you enter Hard Mode. The Ice Book is crafted with 15 Frost Cores, 50 Shiverthorns, 100 Ice/Snow Blocks, and a Spell Book. Use it and you can now switch to ice magic.

Holding down ice magic casts a fog of ice in front of you, giving enemies the freeze debuff for a moment. (The effectiveness changes depending on target size and immunities). Single tapping ice magic launches 3 Ice Spears that focus either on your cursor or automatically targets an enemy. These do not go through blocks.

The Proficiency Level for Ice Magic works differently, as it's dependent on the Proficiency Levels of Magic Missile, Water Magic, and Fire Magic.
  • Magic Missile - Increases Damage
  • Water Magic - Reduces Mana Consumption
  • Fire Magic - Increases Critical Rate

Once all three spells reach Level 8 Proficiency, Ice Magic goes SICKO MODE.
Every third single tap of ice magic, a wide ring of ice spears spawns around your cursor (or target) and converges at the middle. This one can go through walls, as well as lock on and follow targets. When a target is hit by this, they are stunned and are unable to move for a short moment. This deals a LOT of damage, and can be your go-to end game spell for bosses. (I killed Lunatic Cultist in 5 seconds with it, insane)

BUT WAIT THERES MORE!

Once all three spells reach Level 10 Proficiency, Ice Magic starts revoking people's rights to living.
Every fourth single tap of ice magic summons a large amount of ice spears, and clicking a 5th time sends them all flying. You can wait until they all spawn beforehand, then unleash them all at once for massive damage, or just click rapidly to fire them like a machine gun. This attack also goes through walls and will track your cursor. The damage of this is insane, but only downside is that you can't stun-lock enemies with the third attack as often anymore as you need to wait for this machine gun attack to finish first before resetting the sequence. Remember this consumes a lot of mana, but I don't think it's a big issue at this point in the game.

Lightning Magic
This spell is available Post-Moonlord. The Lightning Book is obtained by killing any boss during a storm (Sandstorm and Blizzard is recommended). Use it and you can now switch to lightning magic.

Being the last spell you'll likely get, it is the most powerful in terms of damage. Using it casts a thunder storm that rains down large lightning strikes randomly across your screen and deals around 10,000+ damage. to anything it hits. It can be used anywhere, even underground.

Be warned however, as this spell consumes A LOT OF MANA. We're talking 1 mana bottle per second. The spell lasts only for around 25-35 seconds before it turns itself off, but you can click the wand again to turn it off manually. You can switch to other spells while the storm is casting too.

Because of the mana usage, it's not really worth it using this spell normally, but it is definitely grandiose.

V. Additional Advice
  • The best way to level up magic proficiency is by placing down a lot of training dummies and just attacking them, you'll see magic missile and fire magic be at level 10 in no time. Water Magic is still stubborn though, it's best to just go to a lake or the ocean and repeatedly cast it at the water.
  • More TBA...

This mod is an absolute joy to play with and I hope this guide has helped clear things up about most of the mod's mechanics!

Nice Guide! I would like to add that the barrier will automatically activates when you have level 10 proficiency in Magic Missile, and healing magic will purify all the debuff:steamhappy:.
I add a Craftable Item magic ring on 9/1, it can use your team mate's mana instead of yours when you don't have enough mana just like in the anime.

Thank you! I didn't know that, weird since when i hopped off the pot one time the item is still there. I'll add a warning just in case though.

Currently I'm gathering info on the alchemy levels and how it corresponds to the item rarities, so i'll update this once I figure it out.

May have to do something with being in a multiplayer session? Not 100% sure but I do know that 2k stack of dirt not in there anymore, I forgot to have lesser mp pots on me when mixing and already added the dirt in when I hopped off to get the pots

Edit: Think I figure out what cause the lost of materials while using the Alc pot, if you hop off mid craft the materials are lost

ohh big help :o I wish you the best of luck mapping it out for myself still pretty new to the mod but if there anything I can provide for info wise more than happy to help.

Was able to clone hell butterflies at Alc level 3

Ice magic for myself got unlocked when I obtain the Water Magic Book (Still Pre-Hardmode), not sure if a bug or feature?

In case anything causing a conflict I am using Calamity with this mod

Thank you very much! Yeah the hardest one to level is the water magic. It gains proficiency "every use", instead of "if it hits enemies", so they likely balanced it to have lower exp gains compared to the other two magic. Spent like a good 20 or so minutes flooding an entire crimson biome to get from level 8 to 10 ;-;

water magic book dropped before defeating skeletron, is it bug?

Oh i forgot to update that part, the water magic book can drop from any of the books found in the temple. So you technically don't need to fight skeletron if youre lucky enough to get it without going too deep in the Temple.
I create a character named Elainа, but the character does not change

i also have that same problem, don't know why

How do I get above level 5? According to the page its "the maximum proficiency is increased according to the rarity of the acquired item" but what does that mean? The rarest item in my inventory? Because I have a lime item but my cap is still 5 when lime is 7.

If youre talking about alchemy proficiency, just keep duplicating the highest rarity you're able to duplicate.

But i feel youre talking about your magic proficiency. Magic proficiency is locked at level 5 until you defeat wall of flesh and unlock hard mode.
