How to feed these cats?

The wiki indicates that animals eat anything, so I was expecting that for your cats mod. But nothing I've tried so far feeds my hungry pet. I've tried various foods in the cat's own backpack, a squadmate's backpack, and dropped on the floor in front of the cat. But he's still unable to eat, and starving. What am I missing?
