More car-like handling?
First of all, I want to start with two things:
  • Thanks a lot for making this mod (and for putting it here in the Workshop specifically, where it's easy to find and manage).
  • I'm fully prepared to hear that this request is unreasonable because it would require fundamental physics changes that are way out of scope for this mod. :)
I've installed this mod and driven the Jeep Wrangler (open top), because I wanted something to give me a "road trip"/"enjoy the scenery" vibe, and it's certainly delivered better than anything else I've tried (which, admittedly, isn't too much...but a few mods).

I can't help but notice that the handling is still very...truck-like. Now, obviously that's not surprising given the game that this mod exists in, but still I have to ask: is there a way from a user perspective, or do you have any plans from an internal perspective, to make the cars' handling a little...sportier? Stuff like:
  • High-speed cornering. I basically totaled the car taking an exit ramp at 65 mph, a speed that -- visually, at least -- hasn't been a problem in the normal trucks
  • High-speed highway lane changes. I've driven the trucks in the game at 90+ mph, avoiding traffic no problem...but if I get anywhere near that in the Wrangler it's game over if I have to do anything other than go in a perfectly straight line.

Anyway, if that kind of thing isn't in the cards then no hard feelings...had to try! Just having a convertible option is a big step for my enjoyment, by itself...I can always set the cruise control to 40-50 mph and sit back and enjoy the road. :)

So, it's very much possible to get car-like handling in the game. Thing is, it's at the cost of all vehicles in the game, period. There is ONE file that controls general vehicle physics, and it would affect trucks and make handling all sorts of wonky besides for cars. The way you can even have some semblance of handling right now is the fact that some cars weigh like 6 tons, with the engine torque cranked to compensate. If SCS gives us more flexibility on generic physics(unlikely) this mod and all car mods will become a hell of a lot better.

In the mean time, high speed cornering isn't possible. I've already done what's mostly reasonable with the static axle weight + engine torque sadly.

Dang, that's unfortunate. Well, it's not the answer I wanted but the next best thing is at least closure. Thanks for the detailed response! :)

If anybody at SCS is listening (I know they're not in here, but typing it out still makes me feel better I guess), having reasonable car physics would add two things to the game IMO:
  1. People like me who love the chill, environmental vibe that ETS2/ATS have can have a new way to enjoy the game. There's a whole crew in the forums who absolutely hates when other people get what they like, but nevertheless it's there and seems like a (relatively) easy win.
  2. Convoy missions could have player-driven escort vehicles. I mean, I guess it's possible today if everybody in the convoy loads up the same car mod, but a) you have to coordinate that, and then b) the car handling still is what it is.

Wait, hold up...one file for all vehicle physics? So the individual trucks don't have individual physics definitions?

Even with and without trailers? 'Cause anecdotally it definitely seems like my truck accelerates a lot faster and handles better when there's no trailer attached (as you'd expect).

Not in that sense. The game has a physics engine separate, the file physics.sii defines some specific variables. What I can remember off the top of my head is things like a cabin mass and some CoG positions, but I’d need to double check.

Ahh, OK. Well, don't do a bunch of research on my account...if you say it's not possible with the way things currently are, then I believe you. :) I just wondered if I've been taking crazy pills this whole time, thinking that the truck by itself handled differently without a trailer attached; good to hear that's not the case.

If I remember correctly, you increased vehicle speeds in the previous update. This is actually a very good thing, but when driving the Ford Taunus, when the speed exceeds 80-90 km/h, the car almost changes lanes on its own. It's like you're going into space, so to speak.
