Can no longer endorse this mod
Update: As of Aug 8th, 2015 (almost one year later), this mod has not been updated at all to relfect these, or any, criticisms. Everything below still valid.

At its heart, this mod could have been so great. A lot of its ideas have its heart in the right place, but are executed very poorly. Over half the new topics are far too specific and niche. For example, in the main game you have topics like "racing," "fantasy," "history," etc. Some of the new topics added by this mod are good additions, but like I said half or more are just ridiculously specific and the topic additions that are actually good addition - like "war", which could have been a great topic - has very poor genre/audience matches. (tip: war/strategy is an "awful" combination according to this mod).

The combinations, by the way, are almost all awful. One thing that is great about Game Dev Tycoon is exploring the topic/genre/audience combinations to make great games, while still exploring some creative freedom. However with this mod, the topics that are added typically have one "great" audience match, and the rest of them are negative and make it near impossible to get above a 5 rating. This extends to the added consoles, for example the "Viva" (Playstation Vita), which has an "awful" combination with action games. It leads to wonder if the mod creator knows anything about these consoles, or genres.

A few other things come to light. Such as the promise of added consoles - which the mod does do - the problem is that it includes things like slim models of existing consoles, for example an "mBox Slim". This is a problem because they come out just a year or two after the original console, do not replace the original console, and take up extra market share, and require you to buy licensing fees over again. This doesn't make sense because in real life the Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 Slim, along with all the other models of the product, all play the same games and generally function the same way, and do not split Microsoft's market share.

In summary: What could have been THE go-to mod for Game Dev Tycoon, a mod that I would otherwise point to as necessary for the full experience, ends up being too convoluted, too inaccurate/harsh with its atrocious genre/audience/console matches, and in the end detracts from the gameplay.

Unless these things are addressed, I cannot recommend this mod.

Great review, thanks!
Just reinstalled GDT to try out workshop + mods. Your review saved me some time thanks!

It's really unfortunate. It could have been really good and I could look over pretty much anything else if it wasn't for the new genres, topics, and consoles having /AWFUL/ combinations.
And the mod hasn't been updated since this review so =/

I'd have to agree. The source code is public, so if you look here: https://github.com/DzjengisKhan/GDT-Expansion-Pack/blob/master/ExpansionPack/source/source.js and use this https://forum.greenheartgames.com/t/ques-how-to-edit-genre-audience-weightings/9679 as a reference, you can see all of the weightings for different topics. It's kind of a spoiler, but it raises some serious red flags, such as why War has a 0.6 with strategy and canoeing has a solid 1. That makes no sense to me. What could possibly be strategic about a canoeing game? Strategy to me is planning steps ahead. Chess is strategy. Canoeing is picking which side of a boat to row on.

Yep for sure, Canoeing if anything should be an excellent match with simulation, and maybe an okay match with action and an awful match with anything else. But the matchs in this mod don't even make sense to me!

Seeing that the source is available, what about forking the project and updating it? i.e. Rewieght the matches and removing some of the pointless platform additions... ;)

I haven't coded in nearly a decade, and while I'm sure it'd be a simple matter of some variable adjusting, I don't really have the time to look into it either. I'd be 100% behind anyone that wanted to tackle it though, perhaps help decide appropriate combination ratings.
This sounded like the perfect mod and I'm very disappointed that it could be so poorly executed. your review was very helpful, thank you. I hope someone else makes a better, similar mod or this one gets fixed.

I'm still yet to see a well-executed mod with loads of great features for GDT.

I, too, find myself agreeing with the points the OP made. This could be a great mod, if just a bit more work and balancing were put into it.

I believe the Mod works great. Translation is not good, though.

I have to agree with you. The »slim« platforms are ridiculous. I'd love to see some modding love given to platforms, but simply adding (many) more platforms just dosen't work very well giving how the game works. More platforms just dillutes the value of each platform. Hurray, another console I won't have time or intrest developing games for ...

Maybe slims, gamling colors and the like could be represnted by »revivals« of their mother platorm. As the PC does.

Also, this mod adds a feature to develop your own pc. Or rather, I get to choose pre-existing components to build a pc of and this »new development« basically dublicates the console feature of the original game. Okey, you can simply ignore this »feature«. That's the only thing I like about it.
