We can go back and forth all day on what comments are immature, flaming or simply snide, but truthfully your comment went along the lines of, 'what, you're too busy to type just a few lines when people keeping asking for it? I guess you just like seeing people unhappy. but whatevs, it's your mod.' I'm paraphrasing, but what you typed wasn't far off. If I could undelete it I would, just so you could take a second look at it.
Never the less, you are correct. I still receive a fair amount of trolling considering they're just mods for an aging game that was designed for a niche crowd. Usually I just delete the comments and move on, but occasionally I'll throw ♥♥♥♥ right back at them. I know there are people who more or less appreciate my work and, with the most optimistic point of view, I can assume those people are a silent majority. But really, of the most vocal, there are far more people trying to out-troll each other or make the most sarcastic edgy comment evaaar for internet fame, than there are people sharing their genuine point of view or giving actual feedback. And you might be thinking that's normal because this is the internet, but no, it's not. The DS community was never like that until they released Don't Starve Together.
In fact, I'm going to step it up and go from semi-rant into full on rant mode now. Everything changed when they decided to make a multiplayer version. For the longest time, DS was single player only and proud of it. Klei was very outspoken about keeping it single player and even had an emoticon on their official forums with Wilson holding up a sign that said "No multiplayer!" So every time somebody came in saying, "I'm not buying this until there is multiplayer! If you want my money, you'll have to add multiplayer, so please make multiplayer!" everybody could post that emoticon, or one of a dozen links where the developers said they would never make it multiplayer.
Then a few years later, Klei finally caved in and did it. Suddenly all of the obnoxious loudmouths who refuse to touch single player games were given a whole new community to be an obnoxious loudmouth in. And this is the worst part of the gaming community. They treat modders like the modders sold them something, and therefore are obligated to accommodate them. Anytime some aspect of some mod didn't meet their expectations, they whined about it. They went around to every single DS mod and whined for a DST port. Even if it's something that could never ever work in DST, or was a concept that had already been implemented for DST, they still whined for it. They whined, called modders names, and generally just made virtual diarrhea with their keyboards for anybody who didn't even want the multiplayer version, much less pay $15 for it. It was a real ♥♥♥♥ show and still regret buying DST.
And honestly the last thing the DS community needed was another ♥♥♥♥ show, since the developers were no stranger to treating modders like ♥♥♥♥ either. I once came across a public discussion about some aspect of the internal workings of DS and one developer was saying to the other, "If we make this change, it will break a lot of mods." And the other developer replied with (and this is a direct quote), "Who cares?" I don't even remember what they were talking about changing because I was so blown away by such a blatant lack of ♥♥♥♥♥ being given for the people who work so hard to make their game so much better for no pay and an extremely tiny amount of fame. Being a modder was already difficult enough when you get ♥♥♥♥ on by the public, get ♥♥♥♥ on by updates, get ♥♥♥♥ on by restrictive and needlessly confusing code, and get ♥♥♥♥ on by bugs in the game. Getting ♥♥♥♥ on by the developers themselves, especially when you not only improve their game but also fix their bugs, is just going too far.
So if you're considering becoming a modder, this is my message to you: Consider making your own games first. It's way more work and way more time consuming, but modding somebody else's code is too restrictive, you get ♥♥♥♥ on from all directions, you end up making life long enemies, and you'll be extremely lucky if you ever see a single penny from it. The occasional "Thank you" is great and nothing can replace that, but that "Thank you" is pretty much the ceiling for your success. Especially since the gaming community nearly raged themselves into a coma when Bethesda almost allowed modders to charge money for their mods. Talk about an unappreciative and entitled community.
Anyways, this was way longer of a response than I wanted to make, but you seem to be more perceptive than the average person and generally want to understand, so I figured you could appreciate this other point of view. It's a glimpse of whole other world of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ developers have to deal with that the general public and gaming community never sees.
It seems like this game, namely its developers and consumers, have really let you down. I'm sorry I had any part to play in reinforcing that idea. I do understand how you feel and it's not a good feeling at all.
If you still want me to buy you SW for you, please let me know, but only if you're going to play it. I mean I want you to enjoy it and not buy it for you just so you can make a mod or update it or whatever you call it, I'm not sure.
- Don't know, don't care, don't have time to check.
- Even if I buy SW for you ?"
Keep your good work for what it is, mouse : a good work. Thanks anyway if *anyhow* you come across some information about it working in SW or not, and nevermind if that second case happens.
