Balin guide
First off if you don't want to save scum endlessly you'll have to either put this into console
effect every_province = { remove_province_modifier = durins_bane_modifier }
or use one of the balrog/balin submods that either remove or increases your chances of defeating it.

After that is done or you've decided to take your 1% chance against the balrog make sure to station your maa, get a marriage as early as possible to get gold and produce an heir. At the sametime start a learn language scheme against Elrond while befriending him and once both of those succeed negotiate a alliance with him. Try to build economy buildings first and whenever you are in war offensive or defensive always call Elrond. Before you go on offensive wars though I would highly recommend that you make sure hes not in a war himself and that he has full army strength. I would also recommend befriending Ori cause sometimes Dain will yoink him away to land him or one of his siblings/father which will make him go over there even though Dain is out of his diplomatic range. You should be able to figure out the rest for yourself, I'd highly recommend going for the great mine county it has mithril and will give you a decent income boost.

I would like to offer an alternative strategy.
Ally Elrond or Aragorn first (if have no perk to ally you probably have to reload). Try to beat Hell Roamers twice with the help of elves from Imlardis to move south. Next start colony in deepest pit. Holy war Darkest Grotto and move capital there. Balrog and Greenskins will not follow you there so you are safe.

Regarding Durin's bane always run. I expect the most reliable is taking greenskins counties and giving those to landless noble without family. Giving noble full set of +prowess items to cap it around 100 and waiting for these 10% to trigger.

Works with Ironman.

Its kinda awesome that even with 100 prowess you only have 10% chance of victory against Balrog. I wish that they add some sort of event or building that would raise your chances. Like an event path that leads to you surviving long enough for Gandalf to pass by on a specific quest... Or that you could build like a trap in a county, thats like a level 4 building and that requires other prerequisites and that would raise your chances drastically. That be cool, because now I just ran and saved scumed until I won... Took me quite a lot of attemps though. Plus there were no victory dialog when I won, so I guess its still unfinished.

I just reloaded SIXTY times with a 5% chance of winning. I should have a 95% chance of having won one of those fights after 60 tried. I can't believe that I'm that unlucky, it feels like the game has a lock on killing him.

Nerdy as it is, it's just realistic. It's a fecking Balrog. It should take something extreme to kill it. Not a mortal short-lived race. I count Dwarves in that, what's 200 something years to Gandalf?

i dont understand what people are talking about with the balrog being crazy impossible. never expand unless the balrog is heading towards being dormant and you're fine on that. never war until you have incredible amounts of money for mercs, and ideally special bloodline retinues. if you have durins helm and axe, an elf friend and ~20 martial ~60 prowess with all of zirakzigil duchy you have ~30%. You can't do it as fast as OT but you can get the chance to reasonable in balin's lifetime.

Thats from previous version of mod, there was no struggle mechanic, no bonuses from elfs and duchy, and as said in one messages higher - 10% with 100 prowess.

Is it only possible to deal with the Balrog with Balin? I tried to run a campaign where I'm taking all of the mountain holdings on the map and whilst I own most of them, the ones in Moria constantly get deleted due to what I assume is the Balrog passing through and building them up, colonizing and paying out the wazoo just to have them be yeeted into the abyss again is getting a little tiresome. With the Durin house basically no longer existing in my game, am I just screwed, doomed to never hold Moria?

Is the kill Balrog event bugged? It says I have a 31% chance to succeed, but I have reloaded about 20-30 times and I die every time.

You have to reload like a whole week before the event
