How "expensive" is this mod?
I like playing with colonies that are extremely strained on resources in the early game, like wood being a matter of life and death for warmth and cooking, having to carefully choose what I make out of steel because it's an expensive resource, that kind of stuff

Do I need like 300 wood and 175 steel to research smithing or is is more reasonable numbers? Should I expect this mod to absolutely cripple my research speed in the early game?

cripple? no, slow down and force you to prioritize/delegate? yes

So basically it is expensive, just think how many mods are added to a game and now everything need "fuel" just for starting and not just electrical energy, but "pawn energy" with all the things you had to manage to make the researchers can do their work, I gonna install the mod but hopefully, it will let me tune perhaps some cost on the research "fuels"

It's a somewhat expensive mod, but it brings fantastic balance and an additional game mechanics layer on top of Research, without being too over-the-top. The numbers are much more reasonable than your example, but they are enough that you will still feel it, especially in the early game where I find I sometimes run out of nutrition trying to feed my colonists AND generate organic samples for research.
