If you attempt to go for a rps higher than the engine can reach the PID internally accumulates alot of error. For example if you call for 30 rps but the engine only gets to 21.
Symptom is when you throttle back down it stays high. That is the the PID counted back against its accumulated error.
In game solution:
Is you use the shutdown aka manual "trouble" it already has logic to set the PID target to 0. This was to clear similar buildup when cycling the engine off and on. Think of it as a reboot.
During installation you can test your engine to find what rps it can do and set the max allowed to slightly less.
