GENERAL CHANGES:

SOMW is a mod that not only updates the appearance of weapons, but also makes some changes to most melee weapons and adds new ones. In this next article I want to explain list of changesw.

The first and most important thing you should know is that the weapon balance has remained approximately at the same level.

Damage averaging:
All weapons have had their damage normalized to 50-100% of their damage, for example:
If a weapon was doing like 0.75-1.25 or 0.3-1.7 it will now do 0.85-1.15 damage, with the same average damage of the weapon being 1.0 damage per hit. This change was made to reduce the spread and optimize damage output.

Encumbrance:
Weapon encumbrance has been revised to take into account weight in combination with reality size and adapted to game realities.

Difference:
Stats of each weapon have been changed in order to give them uniqueness and make them different from each other. For example: the game has a Baseball Bat and 4 types of upgrades. Each upgrade is different from each other. Spiked Baseball Bat will deal more critical damage, Wire Baseball Bat will become more durable, etc.

Weapon types now also have differences:
Long/Short Blunts: Has an increased chance to inflict a critical hit (which stuns zombies), but has a base critical damage (x2-x2.4).
Axe: Has a reduced chance to inflict a critical hit, but at the same time have extremely high critical damage (x5).
Long Blade: Has a base chance to inflict a critical hit and increased critical damage (x3).
Short Blade: Has a base chance to inflict a critical hit and base critical damage (x2).
Spear: Has a reduced chance to inflict a critical hit and have lethal critical damage.

Hidden bonuses:
Few people know about the hidden bonuses when increasing weapon skill in the original game.
Long Blunt, Axe and Spear receive the following bonuses, in addition to the standard ones:
At level 3: +10% damage
At level 7: +20% damage and attack range
At level 8: -20% endurance cost per swing
Therefore, Short Blunt, Short Blade and Long Blade skills do not receive such bonuses. Why? There is no official answer to this question, but I think it's simply unfair.
SOMW adds a similar hidden bonus to all melee weapon types, which should equal the weapon's maximum effectiveness. You just choose the type that you like the most!
All weapons have already been slightly adjusted to accommodate these changes.

Now more about Short Blade:
In the original game, Stab Short Blade such as a Hunting Knife, a Kitchen Knife or a Screwdriver have the following problems:
- Short Blade weapons break quickly;
- Stab Short Blade cannot inflict critical attacks with regular attacks, which reduces their effectiveness significantly compared to other weapons;
- the critical hit chance for Stab Short Blade only increases the chance of instantly killing a zombie with jaw stab, while the critical damage multiplier has zero effect.
- if you are seen/chased by more than one zombie, a jaw stab does not work at all (it simply turns off and the character begins to push the zombies away);
- Short Blade do not receive unique bonuses at levels 3, 7 and 8;
- Stab Short Blade have a 0.5 endurance consumption multiplier, which allows you to fight without resting at high fitness levels.

SOMW makes the following adjustments:
- most Short Blade weapons have become more durable;
- Stab Short Blade now can inflict critical attacks with regular attacks, while retaining the ability to jaw stab;
- Short Blade are now affected by hidden bonuses at levels 3, 7 and 8;
- the chance of a critical hit is half of what is displayed (for example: with a critical chance of 50%, the real chance will be 25%);
- critical damage multiplier reduced to 2x;
- endurance consumption multiplier increased from 0.5 to 1.0.

More information about Spears:
In the original game, Spears have the following problems:
- Spears break quickly, and carrying many spears is very inconvenient because of their weight;
- attaching weapons to Spears does not make much sense due to the waste of Duct Tape and minor bonuses;
- Spears have a very high chance of a critical hit (30%) for possibility to oneshot zombie even with regular critical swing;
- lack of variety: Crafted Spear becomes the only real option for those who pick Spears as main weapon.

SOMW makes the following adjustments:
- an ordinary Crafted Spear has become a bit more durable and lost weight, but damage and crit chance reduced; this is done to motivate the player to make spears with attachments. At the same time, a Crafted Spear remains an accessible and worthy weapon, even in the later stages of the game;
- a Spear with attached weapon has become more powerful: it becomes more durable, deals more damage and has an increased chance of inflicting a critical hit;
- attaching weapons to spears has become more effective: now it cost 1/4 Duct Tape (instead of 2/4) or you can even use Adhesive Tape; attaching a Machete will require twice as many resources;
- (you can also use the SOMW submod Easy Spear Attachments and tie the weapon to the spear with Twine or Leather Strips)
- new recipes have appeared, such as a Stone Spear or creating an Improvised Metal Spear from a Shovel;
- making Spear is no longer affected by the Carpentry skill, because each of us can sharpen a stick with a knife, isn't?;
- added a unified formula for calculating stats for Spears with attached weapons:
Weight: tree branch weight 1.0 + weapon weight
Min damage: 0.6 + (weapon min damage * 0.5)
Max damage: 1.2 + (weapon max damage * 0.5)
Attack speed: 0.95 if knife / 0.85 if machete
Crit chance: 5 + (weapon crit chance * 0.25)
Condition Max: weapon condition max
Condition Lower Chance: weapon condition lower chance

Well, that's all. All changes have been tested for a long time and look harmonious in the game itself.
