Do you mean Research points or Unlock Points. Data Pads provide unlock points for Tech Tree unlocks. Research points, which are used to unlock the Progenitor Key (and I've not seen anything to suggest this doesn't work as it does in RE) are unlocked by the Encrypted Data Chips (of which there are 3 grades), obtained from Data Caches and the Progenitor Objects.

You are aware that nothing of Progenitor Space is currently in the game, so the Gate doesn't function even if you have the key.
