What is the purpose of the flamethrower now?
I'm wondering what niche the flamethrower is supposed to fill compared to other weapons. It's very dangerous to use up close, moreso now than ever, so it doesn't seem to be much good as a close-range weapon, but its projectile speed is slow and it blinds you with big fire effects at range, making it hard to use reliably at medium range. It also doesn't seem to do much actual damage, though it's hard to tell how many projectiles actually hit the target with all the visual clutter it causes.

I've been trying to use it as a medium-range weapon in Abandoned POIs, effectively replacing an assault rifle, but it doesn't seem to get a lot of work done with each tank of fuel, and it reloads so slowly that it's better to just switch to something else once it's empty. I find myself switching to my SMG or shotgun, and then finding that they get so much more work done, more cleanly and quickly, that I have to ask why I'm even carrying the flamethrower to begin with?

It does +50% impact damage against legacy creatures (excluding the infected troops) and wildlife, and +20% blast damage against legacy and wildlife. Weapon mods for it predominantly give all pros and no cons.
On a point for point basis, the Flamethrower fires faster than the SMG for 15 impact damage and 35 blast damage (without including multipliers) from a 150-round magazine and a 4-meter blast radius per shot.
It is ideal for mowing down hordes of Abominations and Scorpions at mid range. Just like a real flamethrower, it is not ideal for close range because you yourself are combustible.

I haven't put any mods in it, so I'll have to try that out. How big is the blast area? It says "4" but I don't really know what that's measuring in. I was in the basement area behind the reactor in the Abandoned Reactor POI where a bunch of infested and abominations spawn, and I was shooting through a doorway, and it killed the things in the doorway, but it felt like it wasn't really hitting anything adjacent to that. I couldn't really confirm what I was hitting because all I could see was a doorway filled with fire until it cleared.

Also does the fire effect on the ground actually cause damage?

Blast radius is in meters. And no the ground fire is just visual.

I think it's very hard to get much use out of it. Abominations are such thin targets, and once any of that fire visual effect is up, it's hard to even see them, nevermind hit them, and since they're constantly moving towards you, you only have a few seconds before you need to start running away to keep out of your own AoE. I found it easier before the recent update, and I think a big part of it is how blinding the fire effect is.

To minimize the damage you take while maximizing splash against them, use your jetpack while aiming at the feet of the thing you are trying to kill. Since you'll be able to see most of their body above the low point of aim, the fire won't obscure your awareness as much, and if you miss slightly, you'll hit the floor and still damage them with splash. Jetpacking will help you take less damage from splash.
