Guide to radar use and VLS missile employment
Skip to "Killing flying things from far away" for the TL:DR

Radar system composition and information

The systems that make up the JM/SPG-27 are broken up into 3 parts.

The NN/SPG-1 Track Radar is a 20km chaff filtering fire control radar with the ability to slave to either the search radar or the targeting camera system.

The upper monitor in the radar operator console displays data from the NN/SPS-1 Search Radar Array, which consists of 4 physical search radars:
- High speed low+high elevation 8km radar
- Medium speed low elevation 20km radar
- Medium speed high elevation 20km radar
- Low speed low elevation 40km radar
The display also integrates data from NN-Link to show friendly positions and shared target positions.
- Red: target position from track radar
- Yellow: search radar return
- Green: friendly unit
- Magenta: datalink target
Targets can also be filtered via the top left mode selector.
- All: all targets shown
- Air: targets at altitudes corresponding to likely aircraft
- Gnd: low altitude targets
- Sea: very low altitude targets
This system can be used to direct the search radar to acquire the target in the desired direction by tapping on the screen on the radar return on which you wish to track.

The lower monitor in the radar operator console displays data from the NN/SSG-1 Targeting Camera System, which consists of a manually aimed or radar slaved camera, and a laser rangefinder. This can be used to manually aim guns, slave the track radar to an optically acquired target, or just to look around.

Understanding how things shoot

The AFCS standard, while complicated on the surface, actually aims to solve the problem of every new ship and every new weapon system requiring a new custom fire control system architecture.

The weapons systems switchboard, found to the right of the radar operator station, is how you connect sensors to weapons.

Sensors, like the radar system, are capable of providing data to both VLS cell missiles, as well as directing the ship's guns. Likewise, something like the main gun could be controlled by the radar, or the camera, or a keypad, or a datalink target, or even another ship.

Using the weapons systems switchboard, we can instruct the system to slave the main guns to the track radar.
- Locate the gun's weapon control panel
- increment the TGTSYS selector to 1 (radar station)
- Acquire and track a target using radar
- Arm the gun
- Press space to fire the gun from your seat

VLS cells are special. They have a second selector in order to configure them. Tapping on the text "AAW mode" (anti-air weapon mode) cycles between the different weapons types available in the VLS cells. To launch anti-ship missiles, cycle to the ASuW mode.

Slaving the guns to the camera is also special, but not difficult. Selecting the "AFCS Output: Radar/Camera" switch underneath the camera system display switches the output of the radar station from the radar itself to the direction of the camera. For more accurate targeting, enable the laser rangefinder from the seat in order to have the guns calculate convergence and elevation more accurately.

Killing flying things from far away (TL:DR)

If you have read the previous part of this, you now understand how the various radar and weapons systems of the ship interact. If you didn't, this part will get you shooting fast.

Alright, first turn on your radar and get a target.

Method 1: Use the upper display (search radar)
- Find a yellow dot to kill.
- Click it.
- If its now red too, you got it.

Method 2: Use the lower display (manual camera)
- Set camera display to MAN rather than RAD.
- Zoom out using the top right options.
- Use WASD to get the target near the middle.
- Use seat button 2 to acquire. If its tracking, its tracking.

Now arm the VLS
- Set MK105 VLS to AAW mode by tapping the text.
- Make sure TGTSYS is set to 1
- Arm it.

Kill.
- Target is locked, and farther than 1km away
- VLS AAW is selected and armed
- Press space
- Keep the target locked until impact

Extras

You can guide the anti-ship missiles using the radar too. Just track a ship, set VLS to ASuW, and go. You can also acquire, fire, acquire, fire with the harpoons too in case there are multiple surface vessels that require assistance with submarine conversion.

Dont forget you have a turreted SAM launcher too! Ideal for situations where someone sneaks up and is too close to engage with the VLS missiles.

On the Radar display. is it North up? Or current ship heading
thatcoolcat1  [developer] 11 Nov, 2024 @ 2:18pm
ship heading up
I have figured out how to operate the weapons after playing this game for one year.
