Frequently Asked Questions
Need some help with Remnants of Kentucky? Here's a list of some frequently asked questions.

What exactly is Remnants of Kentucky?
Remnants of Kentucky is a multiplayer PvPvE gamemode heavily inspired by extraction games like Escape from Tarkov, where up to 16 players compete over the last few slivers of essential supplies on Bria Island.

Can I play Remnants of Kentucky by myself?
No, Remnants of Kentucky is a multiplayer gamemode. There is no single player support.

Can I host my own Remnants of Kentucky server?
Of course! With just a few easy steps, you can easily configure and run your own Remnants of Kentucky server. Check the full guide here for more information.

How many players are supported?
Remnants of Kentucky supports up to 100 player accounts, with 16 players in a round at a time. You can only run one round at a time.

How do I launch a round of Remnants of Kentucky?
An administrator of the server will need to manually launch a round of Remnants of Kentucky using ROK's admin panel. If you are the administrator and do not see the ROK admin panel, try logging in and out of the server.

Is there a way to "sit out" of a round while remaining in the server?
Right now, no. If you are logged into the server while an admin begins a round, you will be queued for the match.

Players on my server are reporting desync, lag, damage taken from unfair sources, or other technical issues. What's going on?
Sadly, the current state of Project Zomboid's netcode is not ideal for PvP, as many players will likely agree. Certain issues, including desync, lag, damage taken from unfair sources (like someone using a melee weapon from far away) and other technical issues can occur. We know because of this, the experience won't be perfect, but unfortunately, it's out of our league to fix.

However, Project Zomboid's build 42 update is coming with improvements to networking which will hopefully make the PvP much more fair and smooth for users, but until then, you can improve your experience by allocating as many resources as possible to your Project Zomboid server, and playing with users close to your region.

When logging in, I get an error message saying there are "unsupported mods" - what is this?
Remnants of Kentucky is built to be played with specific mods in mind- particularly Brita's Armor Pack and VFE. The reason for this is to balance the in-game economy. By adding different mods that add other items to the game, you may experience issues with the in-game economy getting out of control fast. These modded items will also never appear in the in-game store, but may still be found on the island.

In the admin panel, there's a PvP session counter- what is this?
To get around a limitation of the Project Zomboid engine in regard to loot, Bria Island, the arena players fight on, has been duplicated across the map many times. When you end a round, the system will mark that island as played on and will teleport players to the next available island instead so there's always fresh loot to grab. When the counter reaches zero, you will need to reset your server, which would wipe all player data, or wipe the Bria Island map data to continue playing. More information is explained in this guide.

Guns don't deal damage to players in my server, what's going on?
If you are using our official mod collection, you likely did not enable player damage in Advance Trajectory's sandbox settings. If you aren't, it's possible you may not have PVP enabled, or forgot to disable the safety system. Double check your (world_name).ini files.

Upon logging into the server for the first time, I'm stuck in a black void with my HUD showing - what's happening?
This error typically occurs when you forget to add the required map to your .ini file. Please make sure PZ-EFT is added to the Map= section, along with the default map.

When teleporting, I get stuck on a "Please Wait" screen, or get teleported into a black void - what's going on?
If you find yourself getting stuck on "Please Wait" screens or are teleported into a black void, this indicates performance issues with your dedicated server. If you are the server administrator, check to see if the CPU or RAM is maxed out and make upgrades if necessary. If you are a player, make sure your connection to the server is stable.

How can I stop players from combat logging?
For those unfamiliar, combat logging is when players in a fight disconnect or Alt+F4 to stop themselves from dying and losing their items. This is an unfair tactic that can make playing Remnants of Kentucky frustrating.

Server administrators can enable PunishCrashedPlayers in their (world_name)_SandboxVars.lua file, which will make players who disconnect while in an active round lose their in-game items on their character and pay a percentage of their cash balance as a disconnect fee. Please keep in mind though, this will also impact players who disconnect due to network issues or actual game crashes.

I crash when connecting to a Remnants of Kentucky server with a generic "Sorry! An unexpected error occurred!" message
This is primarily caused by a mod incompatibility. Create a workshop collection of ALL your currently subscribed mods, and then UNSUBSCRIBE from all mods.

From there, try reconnecting to the server and let the server handle downloading mods for you. This should fix your issue.

You will also likely run into this issue when trying to start a single player world with Remnants of Kentucky. Remember, Remnants of Kentucky is a multiplayer only experience, and does not work in singleplayer.
