I think he first made the drawing. Next covered the drawing with metal texture (probably use the default ak's one), or he asctually used only shadows to make the engraved effect, while the drawing is invisible so you can see the metal texture through it. These are the 2 ways i know you can make this effect. Anyway, the effect is really cool especially when combined with quality drawing. Well done
One or two steps are missing, but close enough ;)

Just mess around with exponent and phong intensity value(try 80, 255 and the effect should be easily visible). Oh, and you have to set shader setting to Very High.
