How should I implement Nanite Harvester system search?
Currently, searching for Nanite Harvester systems tells you which systems will get the most nanite deposits immediately after being built. The problem with this is that the nanite deposits will continue to grow up to a maximum size determined by the size of the body they're on, so systems with lots of asteroids may score highly initially but end up having lower maximum potential.

I've written a new version that gives the best systems based on their total max deposit size or ships spawned instead, but using it would technically be cheating because the game's UI hides the sizes of uninhabitable planets. This version requires using information the player has no way to know exactly, rather than just saving the player counting time.

What's a good compromise implementation? Or is knowing the exact sizes of planets an acceptable level of cheating?

knowing the exact levels is cheating I think

Yeah I think it should determine the best systems with the info the player has since it's basically a time saving tool to not have to go through every system manually.
Also not showing systems which already have a Nanite Harvester would be nice, the top 5 in my playthrough were already being harvested but the list still only showed them so at that point it wasn't useful.

I could also have it estimate the minimum/maximum potential of a system, based on the defined range of sizes randomly generated planets of types that can get nanite deposits can have. e.g.
  • Random asteroids are always size 5
  • Random gas giants are size 20-30, or 8-15 if a moon
  • Random Molten worlds are size 14-30, or 6-12 if moon
  • Random Barren, Barren (Cold), Broken, and Shattered worlds are size 12-30, or 6-10 if moon
  • Random Frozen worlds are size 10-25, or 6-10 if moon

I'll see if I can find what's causing that and put a fix in the patch I'm planning for today.

Using the median size for every planet is fine imo since everyone could do the math themself, using the exact values is a bit cheaty.

Why is it considered cheating to see the size of uninhabitable planets? You can already do that if you get Astrocreator Azaryn. You should be able to see the size of any planet you survey, habitable or not. It is downright stupid that you can ascend the entire galaxy but you still can't tell just how big a uninhabitable planet is. If you don't want to know that info, then just don't ever get Azaryn.

I second MikeSeven, the fact we can't see the size of uninhabitable bodies in the first place is really stupid. I hate having to guesstimate sizes when terraforming with Azaryn or Gigastructures.

I think it's perfectly fine to see exact value, because it just depends on planet size rather than any random event at galaxy creation (example of latter is L-cluster which I would consider cheating). It's already information accessible in game via Azaryn and probably will get implemented just like basegame arc furnace/habitat tooltips.
