Contributing Voice Lines
Introduction

Thanks for taking an interest! If you want to contribute your own voice to the voice pack, it's a bit of a process. Fortunately you don't have to navigate a Unity project setup- that's all on my end. Though your job isn't purely the easier one. I aimed to record 7 variations of each "line" for each panic state. Of course by no means should you aim for that amount, but we'll talk about that later. My point being is that it's quite a commitment, and it's no worries if you can't keep it.

Hardware and Software

The first step is to make sure you have all the tools required to record lines. I know mine have an effect applied, but I needed a clean recording to make that happen properly. That means I need the full dynamic range of my voice as well as minimal background noise. If you're already familiar with DAW's, microphones, and preamps, feel free to skip this section.

The first order of business is making sure you have a good microphone to record with. Unfortunately, many microphones for everyday use will not suffice. They don't capture the full range of hearing (20hz - 20000hz). If you have a condenser microphone, MAYBE a dynamic microphone, that will suffice. These microphones also require a pre-amp to be powered (phantom power) or just simply to hook your XLR connection into. Some USB mics can suffice, but it is heavily dependent on the model. We want a flat frequency response, so as to record a voice as "dry" as possible.

Next is your software. If you have a preferred DAW you like to use, stick with it. Otherwise I would recommend REAPER as a free one. I wont get into the specific details, but we want something that can render .wav files. When you send over the voicelines, they need to be in that format for them to work in-game. Audacity can work in this instance, but it's a workflow I'm not familiar with, so I can't help you as much. But one you have everything set, we can get to recording

Recording Lines

The fun stuff! Keep that in mind when you record your 400th panic line.

The game has 33 specific categories in regards to "lines". Each of these categories has 3 panic states. So whatever number you're aiming for in terms of voice line variation, multiply that by 99. If you were to record just 3 lines per panic state, you'd still end up recording 297 unique lines of dialogue.

What this leads me to is consistency, and that comes from having a strong sense of character. For what we need in terms of character for NEBULOUS is just yourself. In command of a space-faring vessel. It's your job, and you're either "normal day at work", tense under undesirable conditions, or being faced with your oncoming death. That's what I kept in mind when i recorded my lines. You don't need to do anything special, keep it short and sweet and be yourself. People are gonna be hearing your voice on repeat a billion times, so best that they don't get sick of it.

The lines to record are as follows

Ship Selected
General Ack(nowledgement)
General Neg(atory)
Movement Ack
Formation Ack
Hold ack
Movement Neg
Targeting Ack
Targeting Neg Range
Targeting Taboo - in response to targeting lifepods
Missiles Fired
Jamming Ack
Locking Ack
Command Disabled
Command Restored
Drives Disabled
Drives Restored
Power Low
Power Zero
Power Restored
Missile Detected
Eliminated - The ship is being abandoned
Chaff Fired
Component Destroyed
Component Repaired
Enemy Lock
Taking Fire
Being Jammed
Ammo Low
Ammo Zero
Missiles Low
Missiles Zero
Target Lost

It's important to have a script to work off of. I can assist with this, but I'll be honest. I worked off of a few words and improvised a decent amount of lines. Having knowledge of radio protocol, and naval terminology is very beneficial, as that is the goal of this voicepack- grounded, realistic, voices. But once again- if you're stumped, I can assist.

Wrapping Up

Once you record all your lines, and you're ready to have them in, you'll need to get into contact with me. I'll have to vet the lines, and be prepared to rerecord a few. That isn't a commentary on your person, but more-so on the performance delivered/background noise if anything. It's never personal. That being said, DON'T DO ANY OF THIS WITHOUT CONTACTING ME. I don't want to have to tell you that the lines you just recorded I wont use. You can ping me @bob752 on the nebulous discord, or add me on steam if we had a discussion beforehand.

Hopefully this information helps! Thanks again for taking an interest
