(Spoilers!) Liana the very expensive assassin
So I found Liana, a companion that costs a whopping 8k, in Praven right upon starting the game. Vowing to add saving up the money to recruit her as one of my early game goals, I left her alone and came back 80 days later with my decked out mercenary army, a few enterprises in my back, much better armor, most of my early game and some of my mid-game (done VERY early) done.

I searched everywhere for her and found her in Halmar. I waved my hands together in eagerness as I dished over the 8k denaris, which was chump change by this point simply because of how good I am at gold farming due to loads of time spent with M&B's singleplayer campaigns and Prophesy of Pendor 10 million gold farm, I was just dying to see this new super powerful companion I just hired.

How much ironflesh? Power strike? Power draw? Power throw? Surely it has to be really high! She's even more expensive than Lethaldiran in Prophesy of Pendor! Her stats must be through the roof!

......Oh.

I'm not sure if this is intentional or not. Maybe she's supposed to be a lying braggart or something like Rolf is, but....damn that is very underwhelming. I think the twins have almost as good starting skills, and one of them is free and the other costs 300 denars.

Post made me chuckle a little Firsty (more on that below). :)

Well first to be honest it's not entirely intended. I hadn't wanted her to a be super-powerful character, but I hadn't targeted very underwhelming either. All of the companions were put together before I had planned on releasing the mod, so they could probably use some more work. One thing I've learned over the past couple of months is that I can push things farther than I thought I could without it breaking down, and a lot of what I did at first was overly conservative. Just think, she didn't always have a riding skill. Nothing like spending 8,000 denars to recruit someone into an all calvary army who can't ride a horse, and won't level up for a long time...

That said, the reason your post made me chuckle was because the idea of her being a lying braggart fit in well with her personality, a know-it-all, full of herself, obviously skilled, but quite simply a jerk more often than not. She's already trying to lead you on and play mind-games with you from the first conversation, so the idea that she's not being honest about her skill level fits fairly well.

To that end I had thought of her as a character who might be a bit over-priced, but not that over-priced. I haven't taken a look at her stats in a while TBH, and while Huynh is expensive as well, she can pay for herself over time, especially if you recruit her early on.

Anyway, that's lots of rambling from me, but it really is a good point you made. I'll go back and tweak her. She really shouldn't be considerably weaker than a Huscarl. Could probably make those power-XXX skills and ironflesh all 5's or 6's pretty easily. Something that says "yeah you're good, but maybe not 8000 denars good" would be my thought at least. Do you have any thoughts on it?

Also thank you too, it's hard for me to judge these things on my own sometimes.

Well, on the topic of Huynh, my only real complaint is that she has 0 persuade even though she's a well-known merchant.

As for Liana, her price is rather extraordinarily high. It might be because I'm a bit biased against AGI, but even her power strike and ironflesh are relatively low. She'll also not be levelling anytime soon so she can't pump up her STR to even get more power strike, which makes her considerably weaker than ironically, Ymira, since Ymira can easily get to a decent STR and power strike fairly quickly. Although, Liana's proficiencies might make up for the lack of Power Strike and Power Throw, but I haven't actually done real testing on that.

I also wouldn't mind if Liana started off with some points in trainer just to make her high starting level useful.

Her athletics is very high and fine where it is.

I can't really think of anything else off the top of her head.

Good point about Huynh, oddly enough the game doesn't give the merchant npcs any persuasion by default: (knows_merchant_npc = knows_riding_2|knows_trade_3|knows_inventory_management_3). I just added some trade skill to what was there without considering it. Not that the persuasion would do much of course, but it's certainly fits the character better.

Updated Liana, changes in bold:

["npc17","Liana","Liana",tf_female|tf_hero|tf_unmoveable_in_party_window, 0, reserved, fac_commoners,[itm_byrnie, itm_mail_boots, itm_nordic_archer_helmet, itm_leather_gloves, itm_dagger, itm_throwing_spears, itm_steel_shield],
str_15|agi_18|int_16|cha_5|level(20),wp(190),knows_weapon_master_3|knows_athletics_6|knows_spotting_5|knows_pathfinding_5|knows_tracking_5|knows_ironflesh_4|knows_inventory_management_2|knows_riding_3|
knows_power_throw_5|knows_power_strike_5|knows_power_draw_5,

I'll think about adding some trainer in there as well, could definitely be useful, but also she doesn't strike me as the kind of personality who'd be interested in training others. Maybe a couple of points though...

Her weapon skills are definitely high, I suppose some power draw could help that more useful (at least in a readily apparent way. An assassin who can't shoot a bow? Doesn't fit very well...

Actually, Persuade's semi-useful in the Diplomacy mod (i.e. negotiating with other lords as a ruler and forcing them to give you fiefs or gold in exchange for peace). Although I still consider it mostly useless, it's, like you said, just fitting of her character. Besides, not everyone plays like I do.

And yeah, I wouldn't think she'd be actively training people, but I think the troops might learn a little bit of something from just watching her in battle and fighting with her considering that she does possess at least some legitimate skill. Even 1 in trainer would make her character much more useful than it already is.

Overall, though, I think that is enough changes for now.

on the topic of Liana, she recently stopped me after I had my first instance of being unable to fully pay my soldiers. Except, all she said was
"Npc 17 morality speech ap24" or something to that affect. Should I be worried?
