TerRoguelike
Tlord 8 Jul, 2024 @ 3:55pm
Finished my first run, here's my review:
PROS: Boss fights are really well designed
roguelike works perfectly with terraria's movement and combat
map design is great
new enemy patterns are super unique and interesting
ending sequence is actually super awesome
final boss was super awesome too
CONS:
no weapon variety, though some upgrades like salvaged minigun help counteract this somewhat
constant influx of passive upgrades with no active element to them makes game feel stale after a bit. game could have really interesting active items like The Binding of Isaac does.
melee feels very weak, no real reason to use it over the gun as it does very little damage for how unsafe a position it puts you in.
lack of movement options such as shield of cthulhu

Terroguelike doesn't feel like a terraria roguelike. it feels like a roguelike with terraria combat and characters. no usage of armor slots or accessory slots, no usage of the many mechanically interesting weapons in base terraria, etc. But Terroguelike has a ton of potential and i'd love to see that explored. bosses are probably my favorite part of this. while they keep me on my toes the whole time, they never end up feeling frustrating. you can tell these bosses were well playtested. I really like the effort this mod goes through to keep the bosses feeling similar to how they fight in vanilla, but with tons of interesting changes that make them more suited for a fast paced roguelike. This is frankly a really well designed roguelike, but i'd love to see it incorporate more elements from the game it's a mod of.
