You say you are a bit new. If you haven't done the vanilla campaign multiple times and worked your way up to legendary difficulty I don't think I would even recommend playing with ChrisOdd's mod pack. This thing radically changes the vanilla game.
However, that being said, that's XCOM, baby! I know, I'm repeating myself but it's the meme for a reason. In fact, I just missed a 95% chance to hit myself, today! It is going to happen a lot.
You use over watch and PRAY it lands hits, but do NOT rely on it for damage. You want your soldiers in full cover or hunkered down if they are likely to die due to bad positioning.
It is basically a "I'm in full cover, but can't really do anything else" sort of tool. Later on it can become more powerful, but it still is not a reliable way to fight the ayy's.
