Hearts of Iron IV

Walkers Special Project
Project Expansion
Heya. The basic concept behind the walker project is very cool. However it's lack of progression makes them fairly useless past the early game. (As they basically are basic light tanks.)

I wanted to suggest some improvements and expansions to the mod.

The addition of different "suspensions". See. I am unsure on how things would work with the doctrines and such, but the idea is that you can choose between a bipedal suspension, a quadpedal suspension and a hexapedal suspension. Each suspension type locks the walker to a own role. (Biped locking the walker role to "Light Walker" or "Recon Walker", with quadped locking it to "Medium Walker" or "Combat Walker" with the hexaped suspension locking it to the "Heavy Walker" or "Siege Walker" role. Each role giving you different stats. The heavier the walker, the less speed but the more armour for example.)

This could be combined with different walker turrets. Light walker turret being usable with bi, quad and hexa suspensions while only allowing light armaments. Medium walker turrets needing either quad or hexa suspensions, allowing for light and medium armaments with the heavy turret being exclusive to the hexa suspension.

Now, there should be some progression as well if you were to ask me. Maybe extra projects that unlock after you unlock the basic walker.

Such as "Early Walker Improvements" giving you the improved walker chassis and leg suspensions (Improved bipedal, quadpedal and hexapedal suspension.), "Advanced Walker Construction" giving you the advanced walker chassis and suspensions and "Modern Walker Warfare" giving you the modern walker chassis and suspensions.

That would add progression to the walkers while keeping it compatible with tech tree mods. (As it wouldn't modify the tech tree in any way.)

Of course it can be massively expanded as well if you want to cross the boundary with different custom walker guns that unlock as you research artillery, different modules as you research support companies and other techs, etc.

Anyways, thanks for reading and have a nice day. (This all ain't some criticism or me bashing the mod, just making suggestions on making more of the mod's potential.)

Was just going to type something like this up myself. Glad to see someone beat me to it. Tech tree incorporation with a lot of upgrades & new models would be delightful to see on top of all this.

I'd also add that terrain buffs would be nice, even if done via upgrades. Perhaps slower with sturdier legs that can better handle terrain like mountains, forests, & jungles. Would give these things a separate use from tanks for breaking through really miserable areas.

Also incorporation into doctrine, unless they're counted as tanks right now.

They are currently counted as tanks in mobile warfare as far as I know.
I agree. this is a good starting position, but there is definitely room to expand on the walkers. maybe having optional special weapons and modules for walkers with time. walkers counting as their own thing but also sharing a category with the tanks in the same bracket. researching the corresponding tank hull giving the class of walker availability as a special project. you could have projects for 'unique walker weapon systems', which allow under chassis turret options, including a flame thrower... because having a big stomping walkentractor with a FLAMMENWURFER feels kinda like it fits. maybe have a cheeky little war of the worlds reference where one special project weapon for walkers and tanks is a heat-ray... powered by atomic energy of course.

walker classes could start with the early walker, which then expand into the scout, medium, heavy, then siege with the walker expansion projects, then of course... we get the various projects for upgrades, then of course... the GROSSENWALKENTRACKTOR, the walker equivilent of the Landcruiser. A 6-8 legged walker that is slow... but impressively dangerous.

Walkers could also become a form of mechanized/motorized if the walker uses troop carriage modules. (I.e. AT-Ats. (Which were more armed, armoured troop transports. Which is essentially what mechanized was in WW2.)
