Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2

Jim Partridge's Half Life 2 Levels
My ranking & review of Jim Partridge's map collection.
Since Half Life 2 has workshop compatibility now I have been playing some of the classic community maps. It took me about 2 afternoons to finish this collection. Overall I enjoyed them quite a bit here is my quick review of the maps in order from roughest to best.

#5 -Welcomeholm

Very small map, easy to get out of bounds, typical ravenholm-esq map. fun enough but very rough around the edges.

#4 - Day Break

I enjoyed this map quite a bit. Map design is good overall and I like how you are slowly introduced to each weapon the rising water section was clever and the physics puzzles are good. Where this map is lacking detail it really shows (Mostly in the beginning). For instance the strider chase or just after the wall turret in the rafters into the market.

#3 - Aftermath

I enjoyed this map allot especially in the beginning where you only have the gravity gun this map makes good use of its space and is a big step up from Day Break. More detail overall then the previous 2 maps, occasional clipping brush here and there but not enough to take me out of it. Elevator puzzle was a tad annoying but the Ravenholm section was very fun to navigate. Cave section was fun and atmospheric & seems to be a bit of a Motif for this map and the next 2.
Being forced to fight the strider with only combine balls in the caves is clever but it came off as too "Peek-a-boo" near the elevator Alex comes down.

#2 - Deep Down

Great map, this map and Deeper Down really gave me the Episode 2 fix I needed though I was a bit cross on weither I preferred Deep Down or Deeper Down more, i'll discuss that later.
Navigating this map was quite fun, I enjoyed driving the car through sewage pipes and off of houses. You are able to get ahead of yourself if you arent careful though. Only real complaint was the proxy mine spam. Boss fight was also fun albeit a tad repetitive (Rule of threes?).

#1 - Deeper Down

Very Charming map. Opening feels just like White forest felt like in Episode 2. I had trouble getting Dog to throw the batteries up to me but that was quickly solved by moving farther back.
Vehicle navigation was once again very fun. The car arena was fun. I absolutely loved the coast drive & the fishing village stop off It is where this map really shines. Dodging the gunships fire was fun but never annoying due to good placement of cover. It was fun to wait to kill the gunship till the next section on the bridge. Auto-Gun section felt a bit to easy to get shot at times but was fun. The only real complaint I have with this map is the reuse of areas from previous maps towards the end, since I played all the other maps it came off as a bit cheap.
The strider boss felt too similar to the end of Aftermath but wasnt bad. Ending also felt a tad sudden.
Overall a very very fun map, voice acting was good aswell.

Thanks for posting your maps to the Steam Workshop!
