Black Nobility
Next update I think will focus on the Black Nobility of the Papacy, the Counts of Tusculum and the entrenched regency they had over the Pope.

The historical setup of the Duchy of Spoleto is totally wrong with the Counts of Tusculum as the Dukes of Spoleto, but the first Count of Tusculum as the Count of Orvieto. I have restored the succession of Dukes of Spoleto and moved the Dukes of Tusculum to Tusculum instead.

In the 12th century, there was a serious and prolonged attempt to establish a Roman Commune, and the Pope was actually turfed out of Rome and lived in Tusculum, so I will also develop that more. The third game start date is right in the middle of the Roman Commune, so you could play as the Roman Commune and re-establish the Roman Republic. Once that's sorted out I'll release that as version 1.2

The Black Nobility could be a mechanic of king level Theocracies, Rome had many patrician families in the earliest start date two influential ones the Orsini and the Tusculani (which becomes the house of Spoleto and eventually the house of Colonna). The Black Nobility provide most of the candidates for Popes and Cardinals historically.
Big fan of this work. Maybe the historical content should be atomised and go into its own mod. I suspect a lot of people will use this mod until catholic trinity gets its rework.

Yeah I might split off mechanics from history, at least history that involves map changes, to keep compatibility high
