How a generator works
source [pzwiki.net]

Usage
Generators must be placed on the ground, connected, fueled, and turned on, in order to provide power in it's radius.

Generators can be picked up with the context menu, but do not go into a player's inventory. Instead they must be carried. This means the player cannot attack while carrying a generator, and if a weapon is selected, the generator will be placed on the tile the player is on. The player is also encumbered with the weight, meaning they move slower. All generators except the [Generator - ValuTech|ValuTech]] variant have an encumbrance of 40, with the ValuTech having 30.

Players should not place a generator inside a structure they plan to, or are currently occupying. Generator exhaust will negatively impact character health very quickly. Leaving the structure will halt the damage but the structure will not be safe until the generator is turned off.

Generators can be connected to the power system of a house via the "Connect Generator" option in the generator's context menu. A generator is fueled with gas via the "Add Fuel" context menu. The tank of a generator can take up to 1¼ gas can's fuel and can only be filled while the generator is off.

Players need level 3 electrical, the electrician occupation, or to have read the "Magazine: How to Use Generators" magazine to connect a generator.

If the Generator Working In Exterior Custom Sandbox world setting is enabled, generators may also be hooked up to other buildings around the world. One of the most practical uses for this is to power gas station pumps, allowing for continued access to the station's fuel reserves.

Range

The range (radius) is 20 tiles on the x-y plane, as well as 2 floors above and below (forming a cylinder centered on the generator with height of 5 and base diameter of 41).

Conclusion

To ensure the patch works correctly, remember to place the generator properly to get electricity in your basements. It's not a bug; simply placing the generator at the entrance won't power all your rooms in a large area. You need to design and protect a zone above your basement for the rooms you want to supply, following the generator's range guidelines. Multiple generators will be needed for extensive basements.

Have fun playing! :)

Does it support the Z layers in vanilla, like, +3, and they forgot to add -3?

Exactly, in the Java code, the variable is limited to level 0 and does not go any lower. That's why it doesn't work in basements at level -1 and below
