Halo: The Master Chief Collection

XAM Campaign
Honest Review of XAM Campaign
This is done on Heroic Difficulty so before anyone declares that I am bad or anything, I have done OG Halo CE on Legendary Difficulty and that is a hassle in certain parts.

The first half of the mission roster was honestly fantastic, the weapons felt nice and the way that the vehicles felt are pretty good, only issue I had was the consistency of the modern weapons being used and such but it was still fine nonetheless. the covenant were pretty fun to fight with the roster of weapons at your disposal considering you can carry a whooping four weapons in most missions which can be used to have specialised weaponry in each slot. want an AR for Medium to Close Range, Shotgun for pure CQC, Rocket Launcher for blowing up enemy vehicles and a Sniper Rifle to snipe distant targets? now you can with the slots you got. You become a one man army and it is fantastic although that isn't to say its a cakewalk, the enemies do still pose a challenge, while every weapon(?) can headshot enemies fairly easily, the Hunters are buffed, no longer being easy to kill with a headshot weapon and thus are mini bosses which is very cool. Overall the first half on Heroic was honestly chef's kiss.. but what about the other half?...

The other half takes everything you enjoyed, spews it into a blender the size of a skyscraper and then leaves it in the sun to mold and rot. the Library was horrific to go through, the buggy textures, missing sounds and just overall terrible to go through. for some odd reason, the dev decided the flood should not have guns and this took me aback because the whole point of the flood being dangerous is because they had guns and they can shoot you back. Instead they rush you down in melee and swarm you like crazy. Now the 343 Guilty Spark Mission was fantastic though, the fact you had to conserve your ammo for four weapons was really cool. the flood being more in lines with zombies wasn't that much of an issue although the thing that scared me heavily was a Necromorph Stalker that came out of nowhere in the room with the weird electrical thingie or whatever because I was checking out this blood covered P90 and all of a sudden, horror music started playing and that was when the stalker showed up. I gotta admit, dev please add more unique enemies like those that come out of the blue to scare me. Now back on track, why is the second half so bad you may wonder? because simply put, it seems the dev has forgotten to place more ammunition supplies around the missions and normally this wouldn't be an issue, the flood usually gives you the ammo because they had the guns so they were walking ammo supplies for you. instead what happens is, you are having to conserve your ammo in such a way where you are forced to not shoot at all unless necessary.. but the flood has been buffed, you can no longer outrun them meaning you are forced to kill what is endless waves of flood coming after you while there is barely any ammo anywhere. fun fact, the shotguns that you'd get commonly after the midway point with the exception of 343 Guilty Spark are just gone.. none exist, I have searched every corner in the library and two betrayals.. no shotguns... what the hell? either the dev has removed shotguns from the missions after 343 GS or they are just nonexistent apparently, meaning you are effectively forced to use subpar weapons to kill the flood but surely they aren't that bad, I mean they can revive once right? nope, I counted THREE revives from a combat form.. and multiple instances where explosions would normally kill them, they can come back from now.. meaning you have to waste EVEN more ammo to kill them.. and this is on HEROIC Difficulty. Why is the flood so excessively overtuned in a way that is harder to deal with them than the Vanilla counterparts?! The covenant are perfect, they have no issues but the flood on the other hand have got to be the worst enemies in this mod simply because they are aggressively overtuned. It got to the point where I had enough and put the bandana skull on, an infinite ammo cheat because I was constantly running out of ammo trying to make sure the flood combat forms don't get back up, it feels so unfair to unload onto a combat form with a full mag from an AR only for it to get back up and start harassing me again. Even with a headshot which should be a one shot kill doesn't matter because they will just get back up. You could just tell me that shooting the limbs would be a life saver but again, ammo is a problem in this mod and with no shotguns in the later missions like two betrayals, you are effectively missing an Anti-Flood weapon for no reason other than artificial difficulty.

Dev, I would like to add something here. I really did enjoy the mod, it was fun and it was great in the first half but PLEASE give the player more readily available weapon and ammo caches to offset the fact that the flood don't use guns anymore, they'd be more fun if I wasn't having to juggle my ammo supplies constantly in the library and fighting covenant on top of that in Two Betrayals. My rating for the first half is 9.5/10 but my rating for the second half of the missions drops to 2/10 simply because the flood are far aggressively overtuned and the sudden absence of shotguns for some reason.

Hi @ℝ𝕖𝕕 ℍ𝕠𝕠𝕕!! I'm sorry I haven't replied to your post until now. I don't want you to feel left out, or unseen. I saw this a couple days after you wrote this, but life has been very busy for me, and I've been writing hundreds of replies.

I just want to say thank you SO MUCH for writing a detailed and honest review! I will definitely be using your feedback to take into account what changes must be made for the future improvement of my mod.

I'm REALLY not sure why you, and some rare count of others, encountered visual glitches with textures and missing sounds. I know exactly WHY it could happen, but it should NOT ever be happening... It's very difficult to diagnose when I cannot reproduce the problem myself. I have literally downloaded my entire mod, separate from my personal files, to make sure everything worked properly, and I couldn't experience the same errors. I'm sorry that happened for you. It makes me feel like SH.IT because there's nothing I can do about it except apologize for the inconvenience.

I'm really happy to hear the Flood Stalker did it's job!!! (formerly a Necromorph model, adapted for Halo with an infection form in it's chest cavity, and a bloody retexture.) I'd love to add more unexpected encounters like that.

I didn't forget to place ammo...I made it scarce intentionally. My thought process: There is a dwindling supply of ammo. The humans on the ring have a limited supply, and they're constantly fighting enemies. I can add ammo to the weapons the marines were using, which you pick up. It won't be very much because they used A LOT of it fighting the flood. So it's realistic, and also this is MAJOR: If you give the player too much ammo, they feel safe. I DID NOT WANT THE PLAYER TO FEEL ANY SAFETY in that level. (343 Guilty Spark) When the player has a Shotgun with 60 rounds in reserve, and a full SMG with 300 reserve ammo, etc... That significantly reduces the tension and stress they feel in the situation they are in. I think I could definitely add more ammo, but it won't be very much. I want to maintain that feeling of "OH F.UCK, I have limited ammo, I better use this wisely."

I even just watched a playthrough of two guys who experienced this EXACT thing I'm talking about, and once they got a shotgun, they felt safe and secure. I want the player to feel scared af in the horror sections. So that is 343 has a lack of ammo.

The Library however? I placed guns and played it through many times on Heroic, and I felt like the weapons I had out were OK. Definitely can see how some players would want more ammo, and I will absolutely add more throughout in future versions. I also introduced the Sentinel Beam to the level to add a new way to kill enemies if you ran out of human ammunition. You gotta use what's around you!

About the Flood: They have not been buffed. Their damage values are stock, but people seem to feel differently about them. I have no idea why. I can't even explain why they seem to revive more than once for some people? I've only experienced one revive, but that's me. I did not change them to revive any more than their default values!

As for removing shotguns on The Library, I'm not sure. I can't remember if I did, or did not. But I do remember that I placed a F.uck ton of new weapons throughout. Same for Two Betrayals. I may have replaced the stock shotguns with a new weapon that I chose. That's probably what happened.

In conclusion, I'm really glad you enjoyed the mod despite the difficulties you had. Thank you for the 9.5/10 on the first half of the campaign. I will definitely remedy the ammo issue in future updates and iron out as many other issues as I can.

Thanks again for your honest review! 😊 :p2cube:
