I was wondering if there would ever be a time where hosting your own local server to play with friends insted of depending on the servers that the programmers have set up?

you could have your own server devs don't have any game server...
Devs have a register server which register each game server online, this one is down but you can still use your own server with friend with direct ip connect and not the list.
