I only ever released this map for L4D2. Unless you're talking about the survivors? There's no built in behavior, no.

The easiest way would be to use a mod that replaces L4D2 characters with L4D1 characters.

If you'd rather do so natively, you can open the addon with GCFScape, open one of the text files, change a string of characters to be the L4D1 characters, and put the addon back together. Not sure if it would still work with other players online but at least youll have a single player experience.
