Portuguese Troops Question

Is it a mistake or intended that a variety of the factions have Portuguese troops?

For example, it seems rather odd that you can train Burmese archers into Golden Armored Portuguese troops.

I'm assuming there must be a historical reason for it, but history was never my strong suit.

I had no idea you could train other nations units into Portuguese ones but I believe the majority of Portuguese soldiers you see in other nations armies are mercenaries or were rescued prisoners.
