Barbarian Confederations

Is it possible to change how confederations work?
Confederations were introduced in Rome 2, but the way they worked never made much sense to me. In real life a confederation is like a group of independent entities that work together in a common cause. In the game though it was just like conquering except through diplomacy. The individual factions just ceased to exist. This is just fundamentally wrong in my opinion. That is a peaceful annexation not a confederation.

If possible I would like to see confederations changed to be more realistic and interesting. The way I think they should work is that it would be an alliance system between 2 and more factions. If one faction was attacked then all members would be called to defend it. If one member attacked an enemy then all members would be called to attack. Or something similar to that.

That sounds like a simple military alliance to me. In one game me (Franks) the saxons and the angles are military allies with each others, and it's basically what you described.

No, a military or defensive alliance is between two factions. What I'm saying is an alliance between three or more factions. So if one is attacked then all are called to defend it. If one attacks then all are called to join the attack.

Confederation is not an alliance... its a state formed by more states. for example: russia is a confederation formed by russian states

I guess confederations in Rome 2 should have worked like the Roman and Carthago parties/factions. I mean, you gain control of everything but the generals of the absorved factions become politicians in "rival factions" of your empire, so that if they lose too much power or feel understimated within the empire they would break the confederation and become rebels with part of your posessions and armies
