Edit: One problem I could see is intersections: the streetcar rails will probably not display on the plain center part (otherwise the road markings would be possible on there, too)
Bonus: We also found code in the 1.1.0b patch for things like bicycles and bike lanes so expect them in the next path or two :)
We're hoping that at some point they'll transition to procedurally generated roads - that would make modding roads far, far easier :)
Quick explanation as to why it wouldn't work on intersections:
Currently, intersections are created by joining multiple segment 'ends' (let's call them Transitions). If you zoom in with the first person mod you can, most of the time, see the gaps between them.
Now, these transitions are procedurally generated for each intersection to fit with size, type and number of roads. What would happen if we added tram tracks to their textures is that they would get weirdly shaped and would most likely not connect with each other. For instance, crossings are textured in these transitions. If you take a look at some of the crossings in your city you'll probably find some places where it is oddly curved and/or fading.
This actually gives me hope that, to add trams, CO changes how intersections are handled allowing more customizability. Let's see what future brings...
Also tried a 90° curve so far, looking good aswell and no intersection problems or anything :)
Assuming you're using buses as the basis, how are you thinking of having both working simultaneously?
Also, have you thought about depots and stops?
