Request for roads with streetcar rails
Hello,
as everybody knows CO promises to add Trams to CSL for a long time now, without any update of progress or further informations until today.
You may have noticed my "Vienna Tram" https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=467810076, actually with adjusted physics and 2nd engine by IPT - my request is if there is a possibility to add an avenue road with streetcar rails in the middle to traffic++ (like the ones with bus lanes) and enforce this type of vehicle to drive on (also at stops which could still be at the sidewalk, CIMS would have to cross the street to reach the tram) and maybe another standard 2-way road with rails on it? I know its not a simple retexture but it could be worth the work (specially if the next patch by CO does not add trams, we would have to wait another 2-3 months^^)

Best regards and thx for your outstanding work!

yeah, game really lack trams or monorails!

I was wondering why there were no trams in the first place, as they were my favourite to play around with in CiM!

Edit: One problem I could see is intersections: the streetcar rails will probably not display on the plain center part (otherwise the road markings would be possible on there, too)

We're pretty sure that CO/Paradox are going to add trams either in next release or the release after that. At their May AMA they stated multiple times that they want to see trams in the game, so we're holding off doing anything like this in T++ until we see what they do in next release or so.

Bonus: We also found code in the 1.1.0b patch for things like bicycles and bike lanes so expect them in the next path or two :)

We're hoping that at some point they'll transition to procedurally generated roads - that would make modding roads far, far easier :)
agree

Actually it seems to be a long time to wait for an official update containing trams...

Yes wouldnt be a quite easy cosmetic change? https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=479169375 Like this? That will say a avenue with a tram track in the middle. And a single tram track just as the buslane road.

It wouldn't be hard to add tram tracks to road segments but, as it currently stands, it would be nearly impossible to make tracks show correctly on intersections. For this reason, I will not create roads with tram tracks. I also want trams very much so we'll both need to be patient and wait for CO to make them.

Quick explanation as to why it wouldn't work on intersections:

Currently, intersections are created by joining multiple segment 'ends' (let's call them Transitions). If you zoom in with the first person mod you can, most of the time, see the gaps between them.
Now, these transitions are procedurally generated for each intersection to fit with size, type and number of roads. What would happen if we added tram tracks to their textures is that they would get weirdly shaped and would most likely not connect with each other. For instance, crossings are textured in these transitions. If you take a look at some of the crossings in your city you'll probably find some places where it is oddly curved and/or fading.
This actually gives me hope that, to add trams, CO changes how intersections are handled allowing more customizability. Let's see what future brings...

Ok that explains a lot. Thank you for your answer and explanation. Keep on with great work m8! :)

Well, I thought you will answer that. But I think adding tram tracks to the game with just 90° and 45° curves wont be a problem at all (if they are not integrated into the street but rather added as seperate placeable asset, this way they could also have their own catenary) - I will check that asap by myself but I actually dont have very much time

You'd need to change the pathfinding to consider using your placeable assets alongside roads. Either way, I'm not planning on doing any of that.

No problem jfarias, I've tried around a bit and I think until the tram patch is released this is a useable solution (at least for lines on plane streets): https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=481081689
Also tried a 90° curve so far, looking good aswell and no intersection problems or anything :)

Sorry, I've set it to public now

Looks good but I didn't have any doubt about segments. I'm curious about intersections though.

Assuming you're using buses as the basis, how are you thinking of having both working simultaneously?
Also, have you thought about depots and stops?
