Lieutenant Hanniquet's Mod Review of War Drive
Overview
War Drive is a unique lore-friendly addition to CoH2 which adds custom elements of varying conditions and effects to the battlefield, in a similar vein to how Cold Tech works with snow maps.

War Drive introduces a brand new mechanic which alters your resource income, unit training, as well as affecting map control while providing a myriad of dynamic wildcards intended to spice up gameplay and make it more exciting overall.

The mod is complete with a UI Indicator and timer found on the top and bottom left of your HUD;
the top left providing the live timer before the next effect cycle
the bottom left providing a UI element which can be hovered over with your mouse to get a brief contextual tooltip.

In-Game, this is manifested in two ways; The Opening Effect and The Cycle Effect

The Opening Effect
As is the name, begins at the start of the match with varying timers.
To give an example, you may be given "Air Superiority" in which recon planes of both teams will fly over and reveal the entire map through multiple reconnaissance overflights; giving you insight to your opponent's early-game build and positioning.

Another example is "Powerhouse" in which you are given doubled the manpower rate, allowing you to more rapidly push out early game infantry and quickly seize map control or suddenly have new options in terms of tech or builds that you normally wouldn't be able to do in a regular match. (This is particularly thrilling with mod-type games such as All Units 170 Added).

The Cycle Effect
After the time for the opening effect has elapsed, the game will begin to cycle through the different ambient conditions every five minutes, yielding various adjustments to the map or the teams.
Note that this differs per team and may not be the same.

To give an example, you may be given a modifier such as "Vanguard" which will reduce your fuel income by -20% but be given +20% manpower rate to compensate.

However, this is not limited to modifiers. There could be map-wide conditions as well, that feature points being turned neutral such as "Stalemate" which decaptures all current victory points on the map.

Despite this, there are many negative modifiers as well. In example, you may be given "Encircled" in which all owned territory for only one of the two teams, will be temporarily cut off from any supply line. This means that units cannot receive field upgrades and emplacements cannot be built until further notice.

It should be very well said that War Drive is not in the slightest, meant to be a competitive gamemode as it brings game-changing RNG into the match which can heavily favor one team and turn the tide completely. For example, the Encircled effect is more punishing for Allied USF as they require a supply line in order to use their ambulance, essentially disabling forward healing and reinforcements for a few minutes.

In some cases, the effects can determine the outcome of a match. "Bombardment" can cause all points to be covered with devastating artillery, making it difficult for the losing team to capture points and make the necessary comeback. Alternatively, Scorched Earth can decimate your infantry forces, wiping them completely as all buildings on the map are hit with incendiary strikes that deals a ludicrous amount of damage; completely neutralizing your army, dependent on map and positioning.

It should be noted that the effects of War Drive are most noticeable in smaller matches such as 1v1 or 2v2, whereas 3v3 and 4v4 typically do not see the effects as drastically. The benefits, disadvantages and modifiers usually won't have that much of an impact on a wider scale.

What's Missing?
As an older mod, War Drive has long since been left without any development for over the last 4 years, as it was created around 2016 with no further updates given.

As such there are many aspects of the mod that are lacking and you generally won't get any more than what is given in the package, leaving much to be desired in terms of customization for your exacting experience.
  • Only 2 Variants. Annihilation and Victory Point.
  • Cannot select which modifiers are allowed
  • Cannot control the likelihood of modifier selection
  • Cannot change cycle time from 5 minutes
  • Cannot change effect timers
  • No Extra Zoom
  • No increase to Population Cap
  • Cannot be used with certain mods such as Wikinger's Theatre of War
  • No Voicelines. It's easy to miss what effect is occurring without your general whispering it to your ear.

    Closing Statement
    War Drive is an extremely fun and interesting addition to CoH2 that adds additional depth and intensity to your game; improving upon your experience with RNG at the cost of competitive balance.

    Do take this with a grain of salt. You may find yourself on the bad end of RNG in some cases and end up taking a lot of losses but remember that the enemy can also experience the same fallout.

    If one is looking to break the monotony of Vanilla CoH2, then War Drive can provide the (mostly) subtle boost to make the game just a bit more fun and dynamic.
