While the amount of effort that went into implementing the new lighting is nowhere near that of which is needed to make an entire map, it still requires at least a few days of work. A lot of that work is fine tuning the lighting to ensure that the level is properly lit as to not hinder gameplay, but also keep in line with the theme and atmosphere of the map. I'm no expert at lighting, but I wanted to improve my abilities, so I worked on illuminating ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ maps.
After a while it was shown there was significant interest in being able to play these night maps, so I packed up the first one I worked on for release, Dust 2. As you can see, it got an incredibly favorable reaction and an impressive amount of attention. Far more than it was deserving given the time spent I spent on it. There are plenty of talented mappers out there that people should be praising instead of a rehash of a classic map.
and @Aizawa I'm not bashing on him if you read my discussion fully, he did quite a nice job with the other lighting.
