Since you have understandably abandoned the mod, please change the licensing.
I understand that your reasoning for choosing this licensing was to prevent broken and unmaintained versions of it from existing. But now your mod *is* the broken and unmaintained version of it that you hoped to avoid.

Which is understandable as nobody's expected to maintain a free mod forever. But your licensing prevents anyone else from fixing it up in your stead.

Please consider changing it to something that would allow others that want to put in the effort to fix it up to do so, otherwise this is just a forever broken mod that became the very thing you wanted to not exist.

I have a fixed up version, but cannot get in contact with the MA to ask to release it.

Personally, I'd release it as a fix with a link back to this one and the stipulation that you'll provide it or take it down upon request.

I wouldn't ask you to release it without having permission of the original mod author, but could you at least share how you went about editing the mwm files?

Normally in these situations, I find it best to ask for forgiveness later.
I would release it, have a blurb at the top of the description that points back tot his mod, that also says if the original creator wants you to take it down, that you will.
Its a pretty common practice in the modding scene, especially for core mods that are required for other things (not saying this is a core mod tho P:)

Its usualy seen as the best option since chances are, the mod fixer will never hear from the owner, and said owner will never return to update their mod, so the mod will stay dead and fix will exist in limbo forever if the fixer doesnt just upload.
And if the owner does come back, and wants the fixer to take down the fix, its really easy and simple to do with little fuss.

Offenbar ist es nicht gestattet, dass seine Mod überarbeitet und erneut hochgeladen wird.
siehe sein Copyright.

I've licensed it under a Creative Commons CC BY-ND 4.0 license which doesn't allow derivative works. (see https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/ ) I did this deliberately because I didn't want a bunch of slightly modified and unmaintained versions of my mod cluttering the workshop.
Buuut I still got an unfinished version of the male version, I could give you that one. It's just missing the textures mainly."
