Range for infantry engagement

I have been having trouble with lining up my men and ordering them to volley fire with the maximum effect. What is the proper distance for me to order my men to fire? Also since the AI shoot on sight, should I just advance as much as I can after the initial shots?

Also since rifles are much deadlier at range, should I just exclusively use 95th rifles for my army?

Muskets have very poor range, so if you feel like they never hit anything you might be a bit too far away.

Rifles are much better at range but are very bad in melee.
