Getting promoted

I bought the commission as Lieutenant ages ago and I have 150 troops under my command. However, the guy at the military depot says I need to prove that I can command more men. How many men roughly is this? I don't want to be a lieutenant forever.

Promotion is based on renown. The next rank is captain and requires 300.
