You cannot merge with a single hinge or rotor because both parts would end up in the same cell on the same grid, needs 2 stacked hinges for example to have the merged grid just be 2 anchor points that the middleman grid connects... and it will be not so rigid, gotta balance masses so that middle grid needs some heavy blocks to act more rigid.
Also if you wanna visually verify merge, ctrl+shift+c will copy only the aimed grid without any other connected grids.
